The one mission I didn't deliver with. I was told to kill the foreign operative...the one with the bright red hair...the day she was driving through Odessa. I shot the car down. Just like any other job. It was going to be a normal job. No one got out of the car, so of course I went over to see if the job was done. When I reached the car someone was definitely alive. I heard rustling in the wreckage of the overturned car. I saw them through the window. Bright red hair. I readied my gun to shoot, but then she rose out of the wreck. I couldn't help but freeze. I knew her. From her face, she knew me too. "James?"
I had no clue who she was talking about. I didn't want to kill her. I didn't know why. But if I didn't shoot, that'd be more suspicious than if I... missed. "James what...look James, I need confirmation that you didn't just try to kill me or I'm going to start shooting. I really don't want to hurt you, James." I had to do something. I didn't want to but..."Who the hell is James." I shot. I just...missed. I hit her stomach instead of her heart. She fell and passed out. I went over to her. The person who was with her in the car was dead. There was a radio with someone yelling on the other end. "DO YOU COPY?!" I couldn't do much, but if she just waited for someone, she would bleed out. I knew from past experiences that there was almost always some type of emergency button that agents carried. I took off the redhead's jacket. Her shirt was soaked in blood from the wound on the left side of her stomach. Her jacket didn't have the button in it, so I used it to apply pressure. I picked up the small radio and opened the battery cavity. Underneath the battery there was a small red button with a little tiny screen above it. I had no clue if the button would call help or self destruct the radio, but I had to try.
I pressed the button and the little screen said "Agents on the way." My com was ringing too. "Is the job complete? We've lost visual of you." said the person on the other end. I had to leave fast. "Heading back now." I said. Before I left, I tied her jacket around her waist and over her wound tightly so that pressure would stay on it. Her eyes were fluttering open. I stood up and walked off back to my vehicle. I always wondered who she was and why I had such a strong feeling that I shouldn't kill her. It wasn't until I saw her again the day I saw Steve and her for the first time in years that I remembered that day. I went after her purposefully to get a closer look. It was indeed her. I had been wiped so many times that I was even farther from remembering then than I was before.
I finally figured out who she was when she saved Steve's and my life the day we flew to Siberia. When we reached the jet, I looked her dead on. She looked at me as well. I remembered. She was my red ballerina. From the Red Room. The only person I had ever loved in my time of being brainwashed. She was the only person who made me feel human. I shot her... I can't believe I didn't remember it...
