the next morning i woke up to the harsh ringing of a phone. with a groan, i rolled over, pulling the pillow over my head to try and block out the sound. when the noise died off, i was able to relax, but only for a moment, because the ringing soon started again. muttering to myself, i fumbled around until my hand found the device and closed around it. i lifted it to my face and squinted against the bright light to read the name.
mat. mat? why in the world was he calling me this early in the morning? my eyes flicked up to see the time and i realized i was wrong. it wasn't early. it was nearly eleven in the morning. with a sigh, i answered the call and brought the phone to my ear. "hello?"
"well shit luci. took you long enough."
well i wasn't sure what i was expecting mat to say to me, but that definitely wasn't it. "what are you talking about?" i asked, my voice sounding tired and confused. apparently, mat didn't notice.
"this is like the tenth time i've called you," he deadpanned.
"oh," i said quietly. apparently the phone had been ringing longer than i thought it had. "mat, i just woke up."
"you did? since when do you sleep in this late?"
"since i had a tiring day yesterday," i responded dryly. having just woken up, i wasn't really in the mood to have to explain myself. "now what do you want?"
mat chuckled and i frowned. i for one did not find having my sleep interrupted funny. "i was going to ask to talk to you, but you seem a little grumpy."
i rolled my eyes, even though he couldn't see. "who cares? i'm talking anyway. that's kind of how a phone call works."
"luci, you know that's not what i meant," mat sighed.
"i know," i admitted. "but i can't talk right now, mat. watson's still here."
"that's exactly what i want to talk to you about! i meant it when i said that it's fucked up -"
before he could continue, i cut him off. i really didn't want to have this conversation again. "i'm not talking to you about this, mat. good bye." and without waiting for a response, i ended the call and tossed my phone on the bed. i then took a deep breath and ran my hands down my face before climbing out of bed.
watson was sitting at the kitchen table with a textbook open in front of him. he was dressed in different clothes than he was in the night before and i saw that his school bag was on the ground near the door. "did you have class this morning?" i asked. i started to rummage through my kitchen to see what food i had. i decided on left over pasta. not the most ideal breakfast, but it would work.
"yeah. you were still sleeping when i left so i just let you be. i thought you might be awake when i got back, but you weren't so i decided to get a little bit of studying in," watson explained as he ran the highlighter in his hand over a line of text.
studying. i shuddered at the thought. "i am so glad i didn't go to college," i mumbled as i dumped the pasta on a plate and put it in the microwave to warm up.
watson chuckled and looked up at me, leaning back in his chair. "well aren't you lucky that you're pretty enough to not have to go to school."
"you know, you could get into modeling if you wanted to."
"me?" he laughed. "no way. you must still be asleep, because that's crazy talk."
