We entered the developing room, and a short old man took the picture and asked us to follow him. We entered the main room where they would develop the ghost from the picture. Developing is what Ravens called the process of extracting a ghost from its picture so it could be summoned by its handler whenever needed. In the room was a large machine crackling with electricity. It had two metal rods with metal rings around them pointing to the middle of the room. In the middle was a circle surrounded by a line saying “Do Not Cross”. Putting the picture in one of the machine’s slots, the old man pushed it in and pulled a large lever next to it. Lightning began to shoot out of the tips of the machine. It stopped after about 10 seconds. It was clear something sat in the middle of the circle, but the smoke that filled the room made it hard to see. I closed my eyes scared of what I might discover when the smoke cleared. Peeking I saw instead of the horrifying being I expected to get, there sat a boy who seemed to be around my age, with jet black messy hair, quite similar to mine. He was stocky and slightly taller than me. His face was sharp and he had bright amber eyes. He was wearing a simple t-shirt and pants.
“A Vortex?”
The operator said, impressed.
“That’s impressive for a first photo.”
“That’s my hatchling!”
Rin said, putting his arm around me.
“So you're the git who caught me.”
The Vortex said, glaring at me.
“Oh yeah, I’M clearly the git here. You’re just the one who was trying to suck out my soul. You are obviously the victim here.”
Rin laughed.
“I’m sure you two will get along with each other.”
I rolled my eyes as the operator handed me the photo.
“You know what, you deserve a donut.”
Rin said, smiling at me.
“Should I like… make him go in his photo or something?”
I said, looking at the photo, confused.
“No, leave him out.”
“Ok…”
I said, looking at him, or, where he should be.
“Wait where did he-!?”
“Boo.”
“Shit!”
I yelled as I jumped away from where he was. He had floated up above me and had scared the living shit out of me. Rin was laughing hysterically.
“It’s not funny!”
I said angrily, blushing.
“Yeah, yeah. Now let's go get those donuts.”
He responded, chuckling.
