"Oh my God! He's come back" I comment in a low voice "It's possible that he didn't still understand how he have to behave with my mother?"
"Roger, but... but... the pleasure is mine" my mum stutters, not even this morning she was so embarrassed and confused.
"Mrs. May, I have to compliment you, this black dress suits you very well" he flatters her and he kisses her hand gallantly "I'm sure that all the gentlemen will admire you tonight, at the Kitchen S9"
"I...thank you so much Roger, but I ..." she babbles, even more uncomfortable.
"It's a pleasure Mrs. May. If you'll excuse me, I would have a few words with your son"
"Oh yes Roger, I leave you alone, I was about to leave"
"When Mr. May came to open me the door, he told me to tell you that he's waiting for you in the car"
"Ok Roger, thank you. Good evening Brian and... and good evening to you too Roger"
"See you soon Mrs May and good evening"Roger moves to his right to allow my mother to leave the room. Only when Mrs. May has started to go down the stairs, Roger comes into my room and he closes the door behind him.
"You do the pimp with my mother, congratulations" I say nervous.
"But what a pimp, I'm a gentleman and you know it" he answers and he runs to the mirror to admire himself like this morning.
"But who told you that my parents have dinner at Kitchen S9 tonight?"
"Your mother told me it this morning"
"Oh, I understand" I simply answer him.
"Come on, let's talk about serious things: what do you think of this outfit?" he asks me, continuing to mirror himself.I sigh upset, only Roger has the ability to make me nervous with his fickleness. I turn to look at him: black satin suit with a light blue shirt that, combined with his big blue eyes and his angelic face, make him a little prince just gone out of who knows what Walt Disney's tale.
"Well, you don't look so bad" I simply reply and I turn away again, I don't want to give him also the satisfaction of complimenting him.
"If you knew how much I paid this dress you wouldn't answer me with a simple "you don't look so bad"" he replied resentfully "Anyway, I didn't come here just for the dress" he continues and he joins me at the desk.
"I've thought it... So, why did you come?"
"I've come here to..." he stops, moves aside the curtain a little and he looks out the window "... to check the situation"
"Lilibeth is not in the garden, Rog" I point out, this time with a pinch of jealousy "And, my dear gentleman, if you really want to know, this morning I met her"Roger slowly turns to me and he says me with a scary look: "Did you meet her?"
"Yes I did, I met her. Not just you have the exclusive to meet the beautiful girls"
"No, I know that, but...but coincidentally, just today..." and he collapses thoughtfully to the window-frame.
"What are these mysteries Rog? "
"But what mysteries Bri! It's just ... that this morning we talked about her and... the coincidences of life!"
"You say that it's a coincidence of life?"
"And what else if not?" he concludes and the silence falls between us for a few seconds.
"What happened in the studio this morning? Has Freddie had any hysterical reactions as usual?" I ask him.
"Yes he had. This time it was John who got the worst, but he is not like me..."
"...and like me" I comment haughty "I'm no longer able to withstand his drama-queen scenes! He always wants to be right, he's... he's unbearable! "
"I know he's unbearable, I know..." Roger replies and raises his left wrist to look at his wristwatch "But unfortunately we have this sing and we have to keep him"
"This is not the point Rog, it's just that he have to understand that being in a band also involves accepting the others choices, the opinions of the mates"
"Oh, the democrat has spoken!" he exclaims in a big voice "If I remember well, until yesterday were you who always bickered with Freddie, it wasn't me"
"All right, until yesterday. From tomorrow I'll change music because I'm tired of this story. If he wants to listen what I have to say it's a good thing, otherwise, but ... but Roger, are you listening to me?" I ask him nervously. I've realized that my friend is not paying attention to my words because his gaze swiftly alternates between the window, to the Hill's garden, and his wristwatch "Roger, are you waiting for someone?" I ask him again."Who? Me? I'm waiting for someone... oh no. I ..." he wavers, there's something that he doesn't want to say to me "I think I have to go, otherwise I'll be late for dinner" and he walks to my bedroom door.
"Dinner? You too have a dinner out tonight. With whom?"
"With Jo, I'll have dinner with Jo"
"Oh oh! So, the things are veeeery serious among you two" I tease him, in the band he was always the most reticent to be serious with the girls.
"Well, yes... I'm trying to make them serious, actually" he sighs and grabs the door handle "I wish you a wonderful evening my friend"
"Are you kidding me? You go out with your girlfriend, I stay at home alone with my vegetable soufflè and you have the courage to wish me a good evening?!"
"But life is unpredictable, my dear Brian: nobody can know what will happen" he concludes blatantly, opening the door.
"You're always weird, but today more than the other days..."
"Eheheh, my friend...tomorrow you'll thank me. Good evening Bri Bri"
"Good evening Rog, see you tomorrow"Roger winks at me and he has already closed the door before I can say anything else. The soft sound of his fast steps that go down the stairs fills the silence of my room for a few seconds.
"And now you're really alone Brian" I think to myself, looking around.
What a strange day. I've finally talked with my father after months when we couldn't talk to each other like civilized people, maybe I've even made peace with him and, above all, I've met Lilibeth. I lean on the back of the chair and I sigh, thinking of the half hour spent with her.
"Who knows if we'll see each other again soon, Lilibeth" I think and my gaze fall again on the solar"system model that Roger broke this morning.
I'm about to get up, but the sound of footsteps climbing the stairs in the corridor captures my attention.
"Maybe it is Roger who forgot to tell me something" I suppose and I call him: "Roger? Are you here?" I scream, but nobody answers me. The sound of footsteps ends and I hear that someone has stopped right in front of my room door "Roger, is that you? If you're making fun of me tell me it now because it's a bad joke" I continue a little scared "Roger..."
The door of my room opens and a beautiful girl appears in front of my eyes as if by magic. She wears a black lace negligee and stockings with edges in dark lace, she has long brown hair and eyes of a bright brown, but they are framed by a black mask that doesn't allow me to see the rest of her face. In her hands she has a record, I don't know which one it's because now my eyes are busy looking at something else: she has a beautiful body, the way I like it, rounded in the right places, the points on which my eyes now are superglued.
"But.. but who are you?" I ask her, I'm incredulous of what's happening in this room where less than ten minutes ago there was my mother and less than two minutes ago there was Roger.
Shhh...
She says to me, putting her right forefinger on her lips. She looks around and once she sees my record player she moves to it. She slips the vinyl off its case, rests it gently on the plate and lowers the bar. The unmistakable sound of Jimmy Page's guitar fills my room with rock and roll.
"It's... this is You Shook Me, in the Led Zeppelin version" I tell her, remembering that this morning I've lent this record to Roger.
The mysterious girl nods with her head and with her right forefinger she signalled me to lie down on the bed.
"Who? I? I mean.. I have to go to bed?"
She nods again and I do what she has told me. I get up from the desk chair and reach my bed while his brown eyes attentively watch me behind the mask. I lay on the bed, leaning on the headboard and sigh, this evening is shaping up to be very special. Maybe Roger is right: life is really unpredictable.
From the next chapter the situation will be much more interesting...
