I smile and look up at Lilibeth.
"You're smiling, so I suppose your father wrote you something good" she says, smiling too.
"Well...yes" I reply, I fold the sheet on itself again and put it in my trouser pocket.I walk to the door and I see the completely destroyed solar-system model on the chest of drawers:
"Tomorrow we'll fix you" I say, as if it could hear me.
Lilibeth looks at me and smiles, I don't know how could she not consider me crazy, she must be a really enthusiastic fan of mine to not be intimidated in front of me who talk with inanimate objects.
"Shall we go?" I whisper to her, I have reached the door now.
"Of course, let's go" and she runs to me.Trying to be as quiet as possible, I open my bedroom door.
"I go out first" I whisper to Lilibeth, she's practically stuck to my back "You follow me, I close the door and we slowly go down the stairs without making any noise, ok?"
"Ok boss, get the message"I sigh, lucky her because she can be so quiet in this tense moment, I feel my heart beating wildly with anxiety. I leave the room, look around and signal Lilibeth who can reach me in the corridor. As soon as she leaves my room, she closes the door behind her and follows me to the stairs. I put my right foot first and then my left foot on every step, every movement must be slow but firm if I want to avoid the creaking of the creak wood of the stairs.
Lilibeth follows my every step exactly, so we manage to go down the two flights of stairs without making the slightest noise. Quickly we reach the entrance, I take my house keys from the drawer of the console, tomorrow I'll have to come back home in one way or another, even if I think that in the other way will be the most probable way. When I'm about to open the door, I realize that Lilibeth is no longer next to me. I turn around and I see her inside, yes right inside, the under-stair wardrobe."Psss...Lilibeth!" I call her in a low voice "What are you doing there?"
"I'm ... I'm recovering my raincoat" she replies, continuing to rummage in the wardrobe.
"What? The raincoat? In August, the raincoat?"
"Sure. How you wanted me to come to your home, only with the baby-doll? "
"Oh no, indeed I thought it was weird"
"If someone had seen me what should I have... Oh, here its at last!" she exclaims in a low voice. Lilibeth comes out the under-stair wardrobe, clutching triumphantly the raincoat in her hands. She wears it and reaches me at the door after a few seconds.
"Here I'm Brian, now we can go" she tells me.I open the door: as soon as I cross the doorstep, the cool evening air sneaks under my shirt and a sigh of relief opens my lungs.
"But...Lilibeth" I stop, turning to her "Who opened the door to you?"
"Roger" she replies me "Otherwise, why would he have came to your house tonight?"
"He son of a..." I interrupt myself, there's still a lady in front of me "I didn't realize anything..."
"Eh, you have to learn a lot from your drummer friend!" she concludes ironically and follows me out, in the driveway.Walsham Road is desert at this time, only the chirping of some cricket, hiding among the trees of the park not too far, fills the silence around us. In the air there is a sweet, beautiful smell, the smell of the summer nights coolness, a smell that I haven't breathed for a long time. We cross the house gate and we reach the Hill's cottage with fast pace. The clear glow of the moon lights the sheets and the rags hang on the ropes, slightly moved by the pleasant summer breeze. On the short driveway Lilibeth surpass me, pulls the keys out of the pocket of her raincoat and she quickly climbs the three steps outside the entrance, reaching the door before me. I follow her without saying a word and I stop right behind her, wrap her waist tightly and I start kissing her neck.
