X walked out of school, occasionally looking behind him to make sure Four was not behind him. After the encounter they had fifteen minutes earlier, he was not up to seeing Four's face anytime soon. X was not to sure why Four was all upset, but he did not want to ask, for fear of his safety.
Slowly, X made his way through the town. As he walked on the sidewalk, he was surprised on how sparse the roads were. Only one to two cars traveled past every few minutes, which was way less than Variatropolis , where there was traffic everywhere.
In fact, everything was different here. The expressions, the buildings, and the noise. In his old town, which was more of a city the more he thought about it, there were way more expressions too. In Numberdale, there was not much noise in the afternoon, and everything was peaceful. Heck, you can stand in the middle of the street and you would not be hit by a car! It seemed so surreal to X, since all his life, he has been living in an obnoxious city, with cars everywhere and street arguments breaking out randomly.
X took in all the sights as he walked down the street. The buildings looked like the outskirts of Variatropolis, kind of like the suburbs to an extent. They were one, maybe two, story buildings, and were much nicer than where he came from. The city was so vibrant, with all the buildings being painted pastel colors with a darker colored frame. It looked like this for every building, and he noticed that the building colors matched the numbers that owned them. Another thing that was not like Variatropolis at all.
X continued to look around, until he made it to the neighborhood. He looked at his phone, and searched for the address that his parents sent him. As he walked down the sidewalk, he saw younger kids playing together. He began to approach the house, he watched the other kids. He saw green eight hanging out with a bronze one. He also saw some of his classmates at the park. He contemplated if he should go over and hang out with them, but formally decided not to go.
Soon, X made it to the address. He walked up to the truck in the front yard, and watched as a brown, capital letter, z walked out of the truck with three boxes, each progressively getting smaller. The brown z soon noticed the yellow x on the driveway, and put the boxes down at the front door.
"Hey X, how was the first day of school?" he asked while walking over to him. He put a hand on X's shoulder, then patted him on the back.
X flinched at the sudden contact, but he stiffened up so that he would not fall forward. "Eh, it was decent, I guess. How was the job interview dad? I would think you got weird looks today too."
"Tell me about it," X's dad mumbled to himself. He began to make his way back to the house, picking up the boxes again. "The interviews were good. I got the job, so there's no need to go back to Variatropois."
X's face shifted to a face of annoyance. "This place is NOTHING like Variatropolis. It's so different. I miss my old friends and not being treated like an alien." X crossed his arms and looked away from his dad.
"C'mon Squirt, I know this is a big change for you. Being surrounded by numbers must be exhausting to keep up with, but it's good for you. You need to open you're horizon of knowledge." X's dad stated, putting the boxes in the garage.
"Then why didn't we move here sooner then?" X groaned. "We came here ten years ago to look for a house, right? Why didn't we get a house then. The numbers wouldn't have been as judgmental if we came sooner."
"You shouldn't be so salty about it. They'll adapt to you as time goes on. You know how many papers we had to sign in order to come here." X's dad replied calmly.
X just replied with a scoff. He knew his dad was right about moving here. This place had a higher pay, and the numbers needed a variable to work there badly. He watched as his dad kept carrying boxes into the garage for further arrangement. Soon, an orange colored, lowercase, x walked out of the house with a glass of lemonade. She handed it to X's dad, and saw X shortly after.
