Brooklyn is waiting for me at the bus stop the next morning, and I'm glad to see her. The last thing I want is to be left alone with my thoughts. I have to shake him out of my head.
She knows something out of the ordinary is going on, but she's a good friend not to question it. I'll tell her when I'm ready, if that time ever comes. As of now, she has nothing to worry about. Nothing has happened, and nothing will happen.
The ride is shorter than I had hoped, and before I know it, I'm already starting off my day in the common room. A soft tune is playing softly, and the patients are quiet, for now.
I hope my day continues to go as well as it's going, so far. Which means, minimal outbreaks and arguments, and most importantly, no encounters with James. But, when does anything ever go my way?
I'm shaken back to reality, when someone sits down in front of me. Of course, it's him. I don't know who else I expected to want to sit down with me, but I was hoping it would be anyone else.
He's quiet. He doesn't say anything for the first couple of minutes, and it startles me more than it should. Even though I am looking down at my hands, I can feel his eyes on me. He has such an intense stare, and it freaks me out. He clears his throat, and I look up to see him, almost at a loss of words.
"You know, they have a new nickname for you." I start off the conversation. His demeanor changes, as if he's amused by what I'm saying.
"They're starting to call you The Maniac. I don't know what I think of it yet. But, I thought you'd like to know." I don't know where my sudden courage has come from, but I don't let it stop me. The tables have turned, and I am no longer the one who is searching for something to say. And, I like it.
"They should have gone with something more along the lines of lunatic, maybe sadistic." He says without any emotion in his voice, and I have gone back to my usual silence.
"On a different note," he lowers his voice, almost to nothing, and leans in closer to me, "I need your help with something."
James' POV
"What makes you think I'm going to help you? You are asking me to put my job at risk, here." She gets angry with me, and it was just as I had expected.
"You don't even know what I'm going to ask you. And, you're the only person here I seem to actually trust. You don't look at me like I'm one of them." I tell her, and she shuts up.
"What." She looks at me, waiting for me to ask her for the favor. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable enough talking about it in such an open area, but I can't think of another place to discuss it, without attracting attention.
"I'm not the killer, and I have proof." Her eyes go wide, and I know I have her undivided attention. Blake may think I have killed those women, but I know deep down somewhere inside that little head of hers, she has doubt. And I may have just changed her mind about me, or confirmed her suspicions.
"So why exactly do you need me?" She crosses her arms.
"You're my eyes and ears to the outside, and I'm locked in a cell every night. I need information, I need you to prove to the world I didn't do it."
