CHAPTER ONE

"Monster Mash" plays on the radio as I drive down the old, leaf covered road. I tap the steering wheel as I dance, singing along loudly. My brother, Henry, sits in the passenger seat, staring at me with a mixed look of amusement and embarrassment.

"It's all fun and games until you run us into a ditch." he chimes in, loud enough to be heard over the radio.

I roll my eyes at his statement, throwing him a goofy smile as I turn down the road that leads to Hawkins Middle School. I stop near the entrance, looking at him as I turn the music down.

"So you're going home with Mike after school, right?" I confirm, earning a quick nod from him.

He reaches into the back seat for his backpack before opening the door, looking at me long enough to say goodbye as he climbs out. I wave, and when he shuts the door I drive off.

It doesn't take me long to get to the high school, and a smile pulls at my lips when I see Jonathan Byers waiting for me at my usual parking spot.

"You're here early." I say as I climb out and lean against the open door. "Any particular reason, or are you just excited to see me?"

He grins, shaking his head quickly as he slides his hands into the pockets of his worn jacket.

"Figured we could get a little studying in before first period. We've got that test coming up." he says, and I mentally slap myself.

"Shoot, I totally forgot about that." I groan out, "Studying sounds great."

He opens his mouth to speak, only to be cut short by the loud screech of tires pulling into the parking lot. I turn my head when I hear music, seeing a '79 Camaro skid to a stop just a few feet away. The door swings open, and a boy with wild, dirty blonde curls steps out of the car.

"Who is that?" I ask Jonathan, having never seen him before. I hadn't heard about any new students.

"No clue," he replies, seeming just as confused as me.

The boy looks our way, and when his eyes lock on mine I have the sudden urge to run. I grab Jonathan by the arm, gently tugging him along as I walk towards the school's entrance. I can feel his gaze as we rush off, feeling relief only after the doors close behind me.
