CHAPTER THREE

"He really said that?" Jonathan's eyes grow wider as I nod my head quickly, still fuming from my interaction with Billy.

We're sitting in the library, books out and open on the table keeping us separated. I had just finished explaining what happened, having been shushed a few times by the librarian in the process.

"Can you believe that? Judging a girl based only on her looks... it's disgusting." I whisper, scrunching my nose as I turn to the next page in my book. I feel his eyes on me, as if he's thinking over what he could say next without stepping on a land mine.

"I get that, but... you are pretty, Emma. And I know what he said was wrong, but maybe he didn't mean it to come out the way it did?" he suggests, and I look up at him thoughtfully. He's right, maybe I did overreact.

"Maybe you're right," I say with a soft sigh, running my hands through my hair, "I feel so silly now."

Jonathan taps his pencil against the table, looking at me for a moment as a smile tugs at his lips. "Still... would've loved to see his face after."

I snort, covering my mouth to keep from laughing as I look over at the librarian. "Me too." I reply with a soft giggle, making him grin.

"So, are we still planning to go trick-or-treating with the boys? I've got my Stevie Nicks outfit planned out if we are." I say with a grin, glancing up at the clock on the wall to see how much time we have left.

Jonathan nods slowly. "You know how my mom is now. Everywhere Will goes he needs a chaperone."

I frown and nod, remembering the events of last year with a sad sigh. I totally understand why Joyce is taking extra precautions. I would if it were my child.

"Well, you've got me to keep you sane." I tease, snorting when he rolls his eyes at my comment.

The bell rings, and with a sigh of relief I stand and put my things away before following him out of the library.

"Thank God. It was driving me crazy having to whisper." I groan out, laughing as we walk down the hall.

We turn the corner and stop, my mouth falling open slightly when I see Billy with another girl. He has her pressed against the wall, practically swallowing her tongue as they kiss.

"Okay, you're right," Jonathan began to say softly, "He is just a douchebag."
