CHAPTER TWO

Something about the new guy seemed off. I couldn't put a finger on it earlier, but now I know what I felt when our eyes connected. He has a dangerous aura about him; it screams of a rebellious nature. Something I have no experience in.

I look around the gym from my spot on the bleachers, my notebook splayed out across my lap from where I've been studying my notes. It isn't too busy today. The coach had told us that once we'd finished our laps we could spend the rest of the period doing whatever so here I am, studying for a test I'd completely forgotten about.

I turn my head when I hear the doors open, a trail of goosebumps climbing up my arms as the boy from the parking lot saunters into the gym. I quickly look down at my notebook, my blonde hair falling in my face as I try to blend in.

I hear footsteps coming from my right, a shadow darkening the paper of my notebook when the person stops.

"Hey... I'm Billy. Billy Hargrove."

The deep voice makes me raise my head, as if casting a spell on me. Our eyes meet, his piercing blue causing me to momentarily forget how to breathe.

"This is the part where you tell me your name." he adds, seeming almost annoyed that I haven't said anything.

"E—Emmaline Cartwright." I say quickly, my cheeks burning as they turn a bright shade of red. I feel nervous under his stare, the intensity of it making it hard to think.

A wide smirk spreads over his cheeks, and he tilts his head to the side.

"Is there.... something you wanted?" I ask when he doesn't say anything, fidgeting a bit as his smile widens.

"Just wondering what a girl like you is doing studying?" he replies, his answer catching me off guard.

I narrow my eyes and slowly close my notebook before sliding it back into my bag. "What are you implying?" I ask him, trying to keep my voice calm.

"Just saying a girl as pretty as you doesn't need to study...not when you've got a body like that." he says with a cheeky grin and wink, his words making my blood boil.

"I happen to enjoy keeping my grades up." I start to say as I stand up, reaching down to collect my things. "And if that was your attempt at flirting I don't see how you've won anyone over."

I push passed him and climb off the bleachers, jaw clenched and hands balled into fists as I leave the gym. Little do I know though, that I'm now a part of his game.
