neil opened his eyes bleary, blinking with heavy eyelids at the ceiling. he sat up quickly, pushing the blanket into his lap. he rubbed the sleep out of his eye with his palm. huh? why am i back in the room? what happene-

neil's eyes widened as the memory came flooding back. he shivered, right...the potion. he patted himself down, twisting around to look at his sides and stomach. i seem to be fine though..i'm still alive. then that means...max is going to accept me as his bodyguard! hell yeah, now that he accepted me, this job will be so easy! maybe we could even...be friends? i dont make many friends.

he smiled, ears drooping happily, i'm glad i drank the potion then!

david looked at max, chin in hands. only the top half of his body was visible to max, because david's long and gangly body stood on a latter, underneath the floor as he talked to his son in the attic. max glared down at the spellbook he was reading.

"why are you being so difficult?" david's voice held disappointment, something that max hated hearing in his dad's tone but would never let him know that.

"why are you being so persistent?" max quipped, not looking up from his book.

"can't you at least consider-"

"no."

"he's going to be really sad you know...he drank poison because you told him to and you still don't trust him?" david asked sadly.

"potion. and yes i still don't fucking trust him. he's only acting loyal 'cause you told him to." max still didn't look up from the book. wow, max, and you called david persistent?

david raised his eyebrows, staring at his child. "i didn't order him to do anything. i even gave him the option to freeload here."

max glanced over at david. he looked back down at his book. "still not convinced," he said in a bored tone.

"uhg..." david put his hands down on the opening on the attic, holding on. he rested his head on the back of his hands, closing his eyes with a defeated frown.

"do you want to choose the other option then?" david asked the small witch, crossing his arms and resting his chin in the crook of his elbow, cocking his head at max.

max looked over with a mix of anger and curiosity. "either you let neil be your bodyguard or...

you'll get rid of that spirit."

max was fuming, furrowing his eyebrows together harshly and mustering up the meanest glare he possibly could. the cat figure appeared around his shoulder, tiny black specks sizzling around it. its empty white orbs stared at david, its featureless face showing no expression. max's eyes glowed threateningly, and he gritted his teeth. with one quick motion, max hurled his spellbook at david's face.
