david sat criss-cross on the porch of the mansion, reading a book. the sound of a speeding car brought his attention away from the paragraph he was reading. he looked up curiously, his smile never leaving his face. a gray car pulled up in front of him, and a woman got out.

"long time no see," david jested. "darla!"

a woman with long, reddish-brown hair and dark brown eyes stood in front of the vehicle.

"i see your taste for weird clothes hasn't changed," she laughed, eyeing the bandana around his neck.

"i see you still look as annoyingly young as ever, even though you're ancient," he teased.

she huffed, but smiled at him. david laughed. "let's go inside then!"

he went to open the door, and it slammed open. he put the back of his hand out as he was pinned against the wall and the door. "oh?"

two boys came bustling out, max in his infamous hoodie, and neil in a tux. "where are you two going?" david asked, cocking his head.

both boys turned to face david, still walking. "game store," max answered. "should have guessed, have fun!"

neil looked up at darla, who had a emotionless expression on her face. he gulped and put his ears down, looking away.

"we're going now," max added.

"bye!" he smiled down at his son. gosh, did he just love him. he was everything david could have asked for! even if gwen said he was a "little shit."

they watched the boys walk away, "who was that other kid?"

"oh, neil? he moved here last month! he's working as max's bodyguard."

"is that so?"

"um..max?"

"what?" he answered, not looking up from his phone.

"who was that other person?" neil asked, holding his hands close to his chest.

"darla, my dad's old boss and apparently fucking friend."

"oh," neil replied, relaxing and dropping his hands to his sides.

"the bus should come soon, you have your bus card?" max questioned.

"y-yeah." neil pulled out his pink bus card, holding it tightly to his chest.

"and remember, i'm only taking you with me 'cause dad would be a fucking mess back at home if i went alone!" max growled, pointing at neil with his phone still in his hand. neil pinned his ears down, leaning away from his finger. "o-okay..."

max held his green bus card out, alerting the bus driving by to stop for them. they got onto the bus and sat down next to each other, max taking the window seat. the ravenette stared outside, watching the blurry scenery.

"so...what did you have to tell me, darla?"

darla squeezed her knee, digging her nails into her skin. "unfortunately...i came to tell some bad news," she sighed, the ground suddenly looking much more appealing than david's face.

"well, your gloomy expression has already told me it's nothing good. so tell me, what kind of vision did you have this time?" he asked, intertwining his fingers to rest on his lap.
