"Don't look away," your mother told you the first time you saw two wolves fight.
You stood at her side, desperate for her approval. As the firstborn and only daughter, you were her pride and joy. Your mother was poised, resolute and stiller than stone as a male attempted to join the pack - her pack.
To do so, he would have to prove himself with strength and blood. Because a werewolf's mother tongue was violence.
"Wolves follow only the strong," she added when your gaze wavered.
How you had come from such an icy, powerful figure was a mystery. You did not relish in carnage as your siblings did. You never found pleasure in suffering as the males did, but you understood the law of the land and why it was necessary for the future of your species.
We follow only the strong, you reminded yourself as the three wolves of midnight, crimson, and umber braced themselves for a fight.
Jinyoung shifted into the grey beast beside you and your fingers instinctively threaded their way into his fur for comfort. You could feel his muscles taut, haunches gathered. He wanted to join the fight with his brothers, but his place was with you. He was the last line of defense if all else failed.
Jaebeom struck first and the collision of bodies ricocheted through the trees like thunder clapping overhead.
The display of force was as brutal as it was assuring. No sooner had you accepted the wolf boys into your pack, made them swear undying loyalty to your family, they were given the opportunity to prove their sincerity.
Of course, you could turn these males away, but they were in your territory for the sole reason of testing the waters - to see how much they could get away with.
They would find there was no mercy to be had here.
Jackson was ruthless. By the time he had finished with one of the intruders, blood dripped from his jaws and stained the ground. His opponent limped frantically for the safety of the woods, but Jackson was hot on his heels, making sure the interloper never dared think of returning to his territory again.
If Jackson was ruthless, Jaebeom was barbaric. Your face tensed as the alpha male went straight for his opponent's throat, having every intention of killing him before your very eyes. You had expected nothing less, but the crimson on the ground made your hands tremble.
"Don't look away," you spoke shakily under your breath, your mother's words echoing in your ears.
This was a test for you, too. Wolf boys didn't want to answer to a weak female. One who could not fight for their well-being and futures. This was the law of the land and wolves followed only the strong.
Jinyoung shifted at your side, fully aware of the inner turmoil you faced. It seeped into his chest and he ached for you. He fixated on his alpha, sending a message that restraint would perhaps be in their best interest.
Jaebeom heard him loud and clear, lifting his ebony head long enough to see the look on your face. It broke him and his rage dulled. To you, he looked feral, wild; an untamed monster spilling blood in your name, but you saw the moment his aggression left him.
Something stirred in your chest and it stemmed from the realization that you had the power to calm your alpha male. It was the same sensation you felt when Jinyoung soothed your aching heart. The boys may have had strength that you could never match, but you certainly had a power of your own.
Jackson cocked his furry head in Jaebeom's direction, shocked above all else that the offending alpha was permitted to keep his life. Jaebeom snapped his jaws in assertion, reminding his delta that a leader's decision should not be questioned, especially not in the presence of a newly added female.
