When the blackout happened, humans that had suddenly been transported to the [Forsaken World] were granted their first trait. The sign that signified they had obtained this innate ability, was the very same gripping fear that everyone had felt in those five seconds of darkness.
A lot of the humans, however, did not even get the chance to realize this, let alone use their new ability. Most of them fell victims to the monstrous creatures that had suddenly decided that humans should be at the very bottom of the food chain.
Even Mayu did not know what her first trait was until she had her [First Kill].

In her first life, after escaping from the school building and went around the streets in fear, she met the other students and teachers who had escaped the school building as well.
Fumihiro Hada and Eito Sawada were two of the survivors from the school. Mayu absolutely believed in Fumihiro then and had developed some sort of dependence on him. After all, they had been a couple for more than a year.
The group had been split into two factions: ones who wanted to check on their families at home, and others wanted to go to the town's police quarters to seek protection. Mayu belonged to the first group and pleaded for Fumihiro to accompany her home. Her reasoning was, Fumihiro's house was also just a few streets away from hers. Surely they could check if their mothers were alright at home?
The boyfriend that used to always whisper sweet nothings into her ears ruthlessly slapped her hand away when she tried to hold him back. She still remembered the third-years female students, who had also escaped from school, smirking as they saw that.
Thus Mayu finally understood: in favor to be king and protector for the other girls, he had dumped his girlfriend.
However, Mayu still decided to head towards her house. Alone and scared out of her mind, all she wanted to find was her mother safe and sound at home. Her father was most likely working, but his workplace was more than just a few train stops. Thus her home was her goal, where she thought she would be safe if she could just reunite with her mother.
The night after she and Fumihiro parted ways, she curled under the cashier desk inside one of the empty convenience stores. Eito Sawada somehow managed to find her and tried to convince her,
"You are a good daughter to your parents, Saito. I left the others so I can make sure you go home safe to see them."
Mayu almost believed him, if he had not suddenly tried to kiss her after saying that. As she struggled, his lust grew more.
"You better not scream. You don't want to attract those monsters... ," Eito Sawada laughed hoarsely as he started to tear Mayu's uniform. Mayu had thought, perhaps, to be eaten by the monsters would be much better than being humiliated like that.
Yet, amidst the despair, she felt one thing at that moment: rage. She was angry at Eito Sawada, she was angry at Fumihiro Hada. She loathed how weak she was, therefore she was angry at herself and at the nightmare the world had turned into.
She saw a few wooden skewers in her peripherals, the type used for yakitori(1) sticks normally sold by convenience stores. Mindlessly, she grabbed it and stabbed one of Eito Sawada's eyes.
Before he could scream in agony, Mayu stabbed another stick towards the rooftop of his mouth. As Eito Sawada was keeling over, his pants already down on his ankles, Mayu stood and reached for the cash register machine and started to swing it downwards in repetition... .
When she finally calmed down, Eito Sawada's head was already a pulp of bloody porridge beneath the broken cash register. There were even some sinews or what must have been his brain matter spoiling Mayu's skirt.
