•Chapter 5: Green Eyes•
"Come now, lass," Mr. Bowman told Madelaine with a gentle tone, placing a hand on her shoulder.
Madelaine's heart raced in her chest and her knees felt weak. She opened the front door of the fine dining restaurant with a trembling hand.
Classical music was playing as wine glasses and utensils on plates were heard. Silent chatters and laughter came from suited men and well-dressed woman.
Madelaine's fluffy dress felt heavy on her body as she scampered behind her uncle when a familiar man approached.
"John, good to see you," William greeted his friend with a hand shake.
"You too, William," John replied, looking around for the restaurant manager. He hoped that William would ignore Madelaine.
"Say, is that Miss Madelaine hiding behind your back, monsieur?" William pointed at Madelaine with a grin.
Madelaine poked her head out and stepped aside, looking down shyly.
"Ah, there's the lovely maiden," William smiled brightly at her. He was overjoyed to see her because he had not seen her for a few years. Although he never forgot how pale her skin was, how she always squinted her eyes when she was curious about something, and how fluid and feminine her movements were, like a princess. "I hope you haven't forgotten about me."
He thought she looked elegant with her long, grey coat and a simple white dress was underneath. He quickly stopped staring at her body when John had caught him.
Madelaine looked up at William and shook her head politely. "Of course not, Mr. Lovat. I will never forgot how kind it was of you to let me borrow some books from your bookstore," she said with a smile, "I wish me and my uncle could come back." For once, she was genuinely enjoying talking to someone other than her uncle and Lucas because William had shown such kindness to her and she knew that he was a good man. With that, she felt comfortable around him.
"Please, just call me William. Mr. Lovat sounds a bit distant," he replied with a cocky grin. "And of course, you're welcome to visit my bookstore anytime. It's just that your uncle is a bit overprotective of you."
John shot William a death glare. William had promised John to not invite Madelaine to his bookstore anymore. John was very uncomfortable with knowing that William had fancied Madelaine for a long time, and he thought that William's feelings for Madelaine have gone but their conversation right now showed that it is false.
It wasn't like William isn't a good man, John had thought. It was because he was twelve years older than her and William had been divorced at least three times.
John cleared his throat and grabbed Madelaine's arm gently. "Excuse us," he grumbled to William and pulled Madelaine away.
William chuckled and waved at Madelaine, who waved back with a smile.
