imma just start real simple and off the bat:

just because you make your OC the most powerful creature in your universe does not automatically make your story good.

if you went along with the sibling fic, which is generally the first step that leads to a multitude in more mistakes in the fanfiction world, then you're probably prone to make something like this happen

The OC discovers they have special powers
ooooooooooo

now, lets say you went with a sibling like Klaus, or Hope, or maybe Kol, usually it's a Mikaelson, isn't it?

And you decided, instead of a hybrid (this is in Klaus' case) let's make her (cuz it's always a girl) extra powerful! let's make her have magic! and boom, suddenly she's the ultra-powerful tribrid

or maybe it's a late TO thing, or a Legacies thing, and she's Hope's twin sister, and she's basically just a carbon copy but she's got something extra that makes her more powerful than Hope, whoop-de-doo

or maybe she's not related to any of the Mikaelsons, but she's still the most powerful creature on the face of the earth, only, gasp, she's in love with Kol Mikaelson!

whaaaaaaaaaa
did not see that coming at all

so, yeah, it's best to not do that, at all

honestly guys, whatever happened to the good 'ole basic vampires? or just plain old witches? maybe a werewolf? (obviously im going full on supernatural and avoiding humans at the moment)

you don't have to make them as strong as Klaus or as old as Silas to make a good story, that depends on what type of writer you are, if you can make us laugh, cry and anxious to see what's going to happen next with a plain old hundred year old vampire, then you've got the writing chops, good luck kiddies

but then again, everyone knows what Ron says about luck
