i had a hunger pent up like a sinking gray summer cloud
and when it slipped with an alkaline bite the flood came
wallowing like old wood aching in the corners
painted over too many times to hide the rust and rot
the others shifted into waves and i forgot how to look at the sky
in the bubbling crowd a silver coin swam out of my pocket
in the gutter it dove heads down and drowned
i laughed at it and floated away smothered by the black tide
and i think the hunger had me
