3rd Person's POV
Catalina stands on the porch of the house she had grown up in, with her hands by her side. Her fingers tap nervously on her thighs and her foot taps against the wood. She takes a deep breath then lifts the doormat and grabs the key from underneath.
Opening the door, she is greeted with the homey scent that she was so familiar with. A tear slides down her face and she quickly wipes it away.
Walking past all the pictures on the wall, Cat goes through memories upon memories in her head. She walks over to the living room table and sees her nursing book. She missed the test when she was in Tortuga, so becoming a nurse was definitely out of the plan. And the fact that she had killed two people was not going to help her case.
Cat falls into the couch and picks up her textbook. She opens it and flips through the pages with a small smile. A tear puddle forms as she thinks back to the two men on Tortuga.
"I can't believe I did that." She whispers to herself and pulls her legs up into the chair.
She throws her book away then holds her legs and places her head in her lap. Tear after tear falls as she thinks about what she has become. She grew up wanting to be a nurse and help people now she wanted nothing more than to kill the men who ruined her life. They made her a monster... just like them... a pirate... just like them.
It had been two years now but the pain was still there. The fear of being ganged up against again was still there. The guilt of killing two innocent men was still there. However they weren't so innocent because they tried to assault her so that made the situation a little better.
Groaning she gets up and stomps up the stairs. Walking into her room she can't help but glance over at the small dagger on her nightstand. Taking slow steps towards it she reaches out and picks it up. Smiling she thinks about how happy she was to get this gift and the first time she had to use it. She tried not to think about the person who gave it to her because he took took a small part in the downfall of her existence. Next time she saw him she would let him have it. Not just because he broke his promise but because of his actions she lost her father. Well that and the fact that her father was a pirate.
Shaking her head, Cat gets out her thoughts and packs a few things away. She puts her dagger in her shirt, in the middle of her bra then she makes her way out the room. As she places one foot on the step to go back downstairs she looks over at her fathers room.
Gulping, she turns around and heads into the small room. Looking around at the plain walls she can't help but notice a large black chest in the corner. She had never seen this before but then again she wasn't really allowed in her fathers room. Cat holds up a lock and groans in annoyance.
"Why would he lock this chest?"
"Pirate." She answers her own question.
Grabbing the paper weight off her fathers desk, she slams it down on the lock breaking the chest open. Catalina smiles lightly as she opens the chest to see two beautiful swords, a black pirate hat, and a few other things. Picking up the hat she places it lightly on her head and looks in the mirror. She smiles then takes it off. Squinting her eyes to see something in the bottom of the chest, she reaches into the box and pulls it out. A letter.
'Dear Catalina,
My brilliant daughter. You are a light. You are the most beautiful intelligent and caring daughter that anyone could ask for. I know that we haven't spent as much time together as you would like but that ends now.
First I have to tell you an important secret that I have kept from you. I'm so sorry for keeping it away from you but I thought it was for your own good and your safety. I am a pirate. When I left the Navy, I still wanted to sail and be free. I had spent time with some nice pirates who turned out to be good friends. One night I got caught and was branded a pirate. Thankfully I got a brand and a warning. Usually you get the noose. I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want you to think I was a horrible man because I was a pirate. Some pirates are good and some are not. It doesn't matter what people brand you as all that matters is your character and your actions.
Speaking of that, Jack Teague... he's a nice fellow. I know many deem him the player type but I can't see it. All I see is the love he has for you. I know it's hard with him being away and working with the East India Trading Company but I also know that you two share something so special. Your connection is nothing like I've seen before. I know you may be scared and may think he might not be the best guy to be in a relationship with but think about his character and actions. He shows you nothing but love and loyalty. He is always there for you and he's a good man. Believe me.
I plan on giving this to you after you ace your nursing test. You are so smart and you will do amazing things. I just know it.
If for some reason you are reading this and I didn't give it to you then something bad happened. I'm sorry I'm not there to comfort you but you are so strong and independent. I love you so much Catalina and I will always be with you every step of the way.'
Cat crumbles up the letter and sits with her back against the wall. Waves of tears fall down her face as she sobs loudly.
Not only did she disappoint her father by not being a nurse and killing people but he had said he wanted her and Jack to be together. There was no way in hell that would happen. She felt like her father was rolling in his grave right now.
"I'm so sorry father. But I can't be okay until all the horrible men are gone. I just can't."
Catalina stands up and sniffles a bit more before grabbing her fathers belt and swords. She puts the belt around her waist then the swords in the slots. Picking up her fathers hat she smiles lightly and places it on her head. Her heels click as she walks to the door. Turning around once more she taps the doorway then makes her way out the house.
She would make her father proud but for now she was on a mission.
