No! Tom I can't let you! Teresa yelled inside of Thomas's mind.
I have to! Thomas said back.
Teresa was standing in front of Thomas, her arms crossed and face flushed red with anger.
"I can't let them send you to the Glade. You'll get hurt!" Teresa said aloud this time, whispering as loud as she dared. WICKED had Thomas's room bugged and there were cameras everywhere.
"I'm sorry Teresa, I have to. You'll join me the next day! It'll be okay!" Thomas said, trying to calm his best friend down.
Teresa's expression changed from anger to sorrow. "But you won't remember me..." Her voice trailed off.
"That may be true, but I'll get my memories back in time. Besides, I could never forget about you forever." Thomas pointed out.
"But what if you get hurt? You could die out there Tom!" Tears started welling up in Teresa's eyes.
"You know I won't die. I'm strong enough to hold my own until you get there." Thomas cracked a smile, though it was forced.
Teresa stood there for a minute. Then two. Then three. Several minutes had passed before she spoke again. "Promise you won't die?"
Thomas smiled for real this time. "I promise."

Thomas sat at the dining room table two hours later eating dinner. WICKED's food was always so plain it tasted the same every time. Tonight's dinner was chicken and steamed carrots with a glass of water.
Thomas heard a knock on the door. "It's open!" He called.
Thomas always left the door to his dorm unlocked. He was in a facility in the middle of no where with a bunch of scientists and a few kids- what was the worst that could happen?
The door opened and Teresa walked in. "Mind if I join you?" She asked.
"No." Thomas said plainly, poking his food with his fork. "Not at all."
Teresa sat down at the seat across the table.
"Listen Tom," she paused, staring Thomas in the eye. She continued. "I'm sorry about how I acted, but you can't go!"
Thomas ignored her.
"Come on Tom! Talk to me, please." Teresa pleaded.
Thomas stared at her for a long time. He knew Teresa meant well, but she was being more stubborn then Thomas was being.
"It's too late, you know that. Besides, I promised I wouldn't die, didn't I?" Thomas hated fighting with Teresa. It made him uncomfortable, especially after they resolved their problem- it was always awkward.
"Please Tom. Stay with me." Teresa's voice softened.
Thomas felt an aching sadness swelling inside his chest. "You know I can't. even if I wanted to, WICKED wouldn't let me. I'm sorry Teresa, there's just no way."
It was silent for a long moment before she spoke-not aloud, but in his head. There is one way.
Thomas stared confused. What do you mean?
Teresa looked Thomas in the eye. We can run away.
