"You’re fucking hopeless. Get up."
The brown haired boy grit his teeth, the hard concrete underneath him but into his bruised hands. He could feel his lip swell and his face throbbed. Everything inside him told him to stay down. To just keep sitting there until everything stopped. But if he did that he’d be less of the man she thought he was. How his father would be proud of him right now. He could taste the blood as it pulled into his mouth. Must’ve cut his mouth on his teeth.
"Get up!" The other boy yelled at him.
He glared forest green eyes at him before spitting the blood from his mouth. It stained the concrete red, finding its way into crevices and cracks. He pushed himself up from the ground, his flight or fight instincts kicking in though his brain told him to just turn around and go home. But he couldn’t. This was his fault and he deserved his anger. He stood onto his feet, his converse stepping into his own blood.
"Jack, just listen to me—"
He never saw the punch coming. His best friends fist sunk into his gut, knocking the breath from him and taking all the rational thoughts out of his head. He gasped for the air that left him, his ribs felt like they scraped against each other and he was sure he had bruises on his insides.
Hiccup doubled over his arm, his body forced to try to take the impact and block itself from the pain. And fuck did it hurt. His motor memory took over, the years of being bullied by the neighborhood kids flooded his head and he found himself setting his stance and surging his shoulder into his assailants open chest.
The impact knocked Jack back, forcing him off his footing. Hiccup stepped out and into his space, pulling back his arm fast enough to land a blow to the boys face. The movement lacked some force do to the pain in his bones but it was enough to knock him back a few steps.
"Will you just listen to me?!" Hiccup yelled, his lips was cut and his face throbbed. His hair stuck out in all directions and his t-shirt was decorated with spots of blood and patches of dirt.
"You fucked my girlfriend, why would I listen to you?" Jack yelled back. His entire body was set to attack again, his shoulders squared and his hands in fists.
"She’s not your girlfriend anymore, Jack!"
"Because of you!" He screamed, his blue eyes wild.
Hiccup took in deep breaths of air, his adrenaline was still pumping through his system but he could feel the ache of his body on the edges of his conscious. He watched his best friend wipe the blood from his lips with the back of his hand. The red stood out on his pale skin, Hiccup wasnt sure where his blood started and Jacks began.
"I’m sorry." He said, wincing at the way his own voice cracked.
Jacks eyes flashed with anger. He stalked toward the brunette, Hiccup stiffened, ready for another assault. Fists grabbed for the front of his shirt, pulling him up into the face of the boy. He could see everything. The hurt, the betrayal, the hatred in his blue eyes. Hiccup let him hold him up by his shirt, unable to actually put up a fight against the boy who he had known since they were kids. He didnt blame him.
"You’re sorry?! That’s all you have to say to me? That you’re sorry?!"
"I am sorry! I never meant for any of this to happen! Not like this. It wasn’t supposed to be like this." Hiccup knew how desperate he sounded. It reflected how small he felt.
Jack looked at his friend, held up by his shirt, green eyes barely able to look at him. It was all his fault. He should’ve never trusted him. But he was Hiccup, his best friend. He never once thought that he would betray him like this, never thought he had worry about his dorky friend taking his girlfriend. He let go of the fabric, shoving the boy out of his face.
