Tony and Johnny quickly stepped in front of Maria and Susanne as Azazel inched closer to them. "Listen: we're going to get the trident for the Devil!" Tony said. "Just let us go, and-"
Why should I let you go? Azazel growled, taking a step towards them again. You're killing my boss! This whole endeavor would never have happened if you hadn't stolen the trident in the first place!
Susanne gripped Maria's shoulder. "W-We never stole the trident!"
Liars! All of you!
Maria looked around, realizing everyone in the casino was staring at them as if they were entertainment while some of the employees stared up at a massive window looking down upon the room. She bit her lip, looking up at the window herself.
The silhouette of the Devil locked eyes with her. A wave of dread washed over her, but she closed her eyes and mouthed, "I'm sorry."
Apologizing is futile, Azazel hissed.
She opened her eyes and looked back at the window.
The Devil's glowing red eyes stared right back at her.
She jumped, stumbling back in surprise and bumping into Susanne.
I can't accept your apology, a deep, yet soft voice whispered in her mind. However, I can let you go.
She bit her lip, moving back to her original spot and kneeling down, keeping her eyes lowered.
Find my trident, the Devil whispered. Bring it back to me, and I will forgive you all. Just bring me back my trident. A ghost-like feeling of a hand caressing her cheek suddenly appeared. I can prevent Azazel from attacking, but only for some time.
She looked up nervously.
Instead of the Devil, a ghostly visage of a long-haired man with dark tan skin and grey robes stared down at her. He smiled faintly, kneeling down to look her in the eyes. Go, he mouthed.
Maria turned pale, looking at him with wide eyes. The slope of his eyes, the curvature of his nose, his long hair- all of it was so achingly familiar.
It was like staring into a mirror.
"D-Dad?" she whispered.
He winked, kissing her head and disappeared.
Azazel cried out in shock as he fell to his knees. The shackles around his wrists glowed white-hot before fire burst from under him and fell into the pit of flames.
Johnny and Tony stepped back in shock. "What the-?!"
Maria snapped out of the trance, turning and racing out the door past the pit of fire. "Come on! While he's down!"
Susanne ran out behind her, Johnny and Tony following close behind.
Maria briefly glanced back at the casino entrance to see a red-skinned man watching her with a grim expression before he fell to his knees and collapsed, the red fire in his eyes fading.
Maria paled, looking ahead. The trident was more important now than ever, she figured. Without it, not only would the Devil die, but all of the demons would cease to exist.
Including herself.
