p.o.v: Steve

"So you're staying?" She said into my neck.

"Yeah, yeah," I repeated several times in a soft whisper as I tightened my arms around her and smoothed down her hair with my hands.

"Good." She let out a relieved sigh as she leaned her head against my heart that was still pounding from our kiss, and I could hear her sniffing from tears that had recently fallen. "Because I wouldn't want you to leave since you've just come back."

"I know," I replied gently, setting my chin on top of her head and feeling my eyes flutter closed as the adrenaline left my system. I felt like a piece of my soul that was always missing had just been found and sealed back into place like it had never left. My lips tingled slightly from the fresh memory of her lips on mine, and it was all I could do to not lift her head off my chest and do it again until we were breathless.

But then the suit beeped to signal the one minute warning, and a memory suddenly appeared in my consciousness.

Don't do anything stupid until I get back.

How can I? You're taking all the stupid with you.

My eyes opened and I stared at a spot on the wall, my voice breathy and far away. "Bucky."

Peggy took her head off of my chest to look at my face. "What?"

I blinked as I realized my mistake. "Uhm. Nothin.." I stalled as my mouth fell open slightly. What would Bucky say if he found out I was staying here? Would he be angry? Disappointed?

My heart sank heavily as I realized it would be hard to live on without him if I didn't know that he was going to be okay. And suddenly, it felt like the only thing I could do was to find out.

"I'm sorry," I started to say as I released her from my embrace. My eyes squinted as they looked at the case. "I think there's actually someone... I need to talk to first."

"Wait. Are you talking about Bucky? As in, Barnes?" Peggy questioned with a bewildered expression. "Your.. best friend who died three years ago?"

"Actually.." I grimaced as I scrambled for the suit. "I'd find out a lot later that he was never dead."

Things were happening too fast for Peggy's mind to catch up. "What?"

I tried to talk as I generated the suit over my clothes. "I know— It's a long story and I promise I'll explain, but I have do this before it's too late."

"Are you—" Peggy cut herself off and seemed to pale to the shade of a ghost when she watched the nanotech suit generate over my body. "Are you sure?" She asked in obvious disarray.

I finished programming my suit to the night of Tony's funeral where I knew I would find him alone. "He'd do it for me," I said to myself as I looked away from the brace and over at Peggy's mascara-stained face that was a mixture of surprise and confusion.

"Time jump commencing in 15 seconds," The automated message said in an erudite voice, and I went back to Peggy and gently rested my hands on the sides of her arms when I noticed how concerned she looked.

She moved her head down to look at where my hands touched her skin. "You know," she began in a low tone. "A second ago I told you I didn't want you leaving when you just came back." She shifted her eyes up at me and the message behind them made heat crawl up my neck.
