There was a kid going up the slide in the wrong direction. He is going to get hurt any second. I wonder where his mum is. Wow he reached the middle without falling, impressive. Oh no there comes a little girl ready to slide down. Come on mate look up. Look up. Look up. Look before you get hurt.
"Ezra!?" Lola screeched from beneath me.
"What? Sorry," I looked away from the kid and looked down at Lola who had her head resting on my lap. She was glaring up at me with her eye brows furrowed.
"I just read the best part of the book and you didn't even hear me, great." She huffed and rolled off me to lie on her stomach. She picked the book up and pretended to read as she flipped the pages furiously.
"I'm sorry. I haven't been a very good listener." I reached over and rubbed her back.
She turned her head, "You haven't ever been a good listener. And- wow you aren't even looking at me as I talk to you."
I wasn't. I was looking at the kid who landed on the sand, bawling, after clashing with the young girl. The little girl looked around frantically and began crying as well. "See now if his mother was watching out for him he wouldn't have ended up on the ground crying."
"Who- what are you talking about?" She sat up and followed my gaze.
"The little lad is still crying. Poor fella. My mum's eyes would never wander off me as a child. If I ever got hurt she would say that her mother senses weren't working well that day," I said as my words faded from the memory. I felt Lola's head on my shoulder and I leaned my head on top of hers. "Five months," I breathed out, "And it all seems like yesterday."
I felt her hand on top of my thigh, gently rubbing up and down. "Do you want to visit her and Luke today? We can stay there for a bit before we head back."
"Not today. I need to distance myself from the graveyard, people are beginning to think I live there," I forced myself to chuckle. It seems that I have been forcing myself to do a lot of things lately. Who knew it was so hard to function?
"Okay how about-"
"How about we focus on you today?" I turned my head to look at her. She had a surprised look on her face that made me smile.
"Me? Why me?" I took her hand and turned her palm up to trace lines on.
"You have been doing the most for me these past months. You helped me with the funeral arrangements, the ridiculously long court days, you helped keep me calm when I saw my tosser father, helped me clean out my mum and Champs rooms and you spent the rest of the months helping me move on. Now summer is ending in a month and did you know we haven't even gone on an official date?" I stopped tracing lines on her palm and held her hand up to my cheek.
"Ezra that was my job as your girlfriend," she said grinning as she rubbed her thumb on my cheek.
"No it's not. Especially not when you just became my girlfriend six hours before all hell broke loose," I saw her opening her mouth to say something but I cut her off with a kiss. I kept her hand on my cheek and waited till she kissed me back. I pulled back a little and put my forehead on hers. I breathed in her sweet scent of lavender and rose. "Let me spoil you today."
She laughed and opened her eyes. She locked her eyes with mine, "I'm all yours."

"Chinese?"
"Nope."
"Pasta?"
