I see the flash of fear in my mothers bright, green eyes. Her body limp on the ground. Eyes glassy and open. i hear screaming. Suddenly i wake up with a jolt, a thick layer of sweat on my forehead. The guards at my door take my arms and walk me over to the exercise yard. I do my daily routine, run 20 laps around the yard, do my daily chin ups and so on. If i'm going to be a sacrifice for the king may as well keep in form, its not like i have a precious life to live anyway.
i still have nightmares from that day nearly 9 years ago. i wish ma just let me go with the man that day. She new she couldn't be sacrificed herself. Only one person from each landscapes can go and they have to be a certain age and be born on the 2nd of November. I'm the girl from the desert landscape and there is another boy from the mountain landscape but they haven't found the boy from the riverine landscape, he must be in hiding still. Lucky bugger. I've gotten used to the fact that i am dying soon. We get good food so that we will be healthy for the sacrifice and i know theres no stopping the king from making his 'special' sacrifice so that he will live longer....
A noise outside the palace takes me out of my day dream. I hear yelling and banging. Not many people come to the palace without invitation. i go up to the wire fence surrounding the yard and so does Lugh the boy from the mountains. Blood is trailing from a guards mouth down the drain and i look for the source. A boy. About my age. locked in a cage. Our eyes lock.
