The car ride home is pretty much the same as every time. The city melts away into trees. The houses go from tall and narrow to shorter and larger.
My eyes are trained at the edge of the trees, internally hoping to see a deer or a raccoon or any animal. Or really anything to keep me from boredom during the long drive home.
Now usually a teenager would be on their phone but I'm not allowed one, or a television or anything where my work is found. That thought causes me to clench my jaw. I'm 18 next month and more sheltered than an almost legal adult should be.
The car stops at one of the only light on the long road, my eyes find their way back to the woods and there in the dim light from the street lamp is staring right at me, I feel their eyes lingering on my face.
I tilt my head at this mysterious figure, the dark making it impossible to make out much about the figure but they have a hatchet in their grasp.
"How peculiar..." I whisper, not blinking until a second before and the figure disappears back in the woods.
"What was that Miss?" Liam asks speeding up as the light turns green.
"Oh nothing, just talking to myself." I sigh knowing nobody will believe me seeing a figure holding a hatchet and just staring at me...
"Well we are almost home. Please don't fall asleep like yesterday."
"I won't..." I smile shyly and look outside hoping to see another glimpse of that strange person. The thoughts of whom I could have seen or if it was actually real fill my boredom and I'm soon at the smallest house on the street, but with the biggest yard.
I'm helped out of the car and inside. I go to my room and see house clothes lied out on my bed, Amy must have done that. I pull the leggings and loose blouse on and head outside to watch the stars come out with my dogs.
I sit on the dock of the lake in the backyard with Romeo and Juliet sitting on either side of me, I have them so I don't have bodyguards all around the house.
The large German Shepards happily sit next to me as I watch the sky light up one star at a time.
"I wonder what's up there.... with the Stars...." I sigh raising my hand and dropping it against my chest.
Juliet nudges my hand and whimpers "Juliet you don't need to worry I'm not upset. I'm just thinking" I pet her well kept fur.
"Starlight it's time for dinner." Paul calls out to me. I let my breath out and shakily make you way to my feet and inside to eat.
Unknown to me the figure is standing just out of view watching curiously.
