The heavenly smell of freshly baked vanilla ice cream cones tantalizing my nostrils I crammed my hand into my pocket, trying hard to ignore the sound of the person blowing their nose behind me and focus on Spencer who was reading me the flavors. At my feet Lola panted softly, a bored sounding guy took orders, and above me a ceiling fan whirred quietly.
Realizing that I was zoning out a bit I frowned, pushing my sunglasses up to my forehead and rubbed my eyes.
"What did you say after Blue Moon?" I asked.
"Wild berry and lavender...."
"Gross, after that?"
"Banana curry."
"Okay, that's even worse."
"Michael." Spencer whispered laughing.
"What?" I asked.
"This place is nice." She informed me, "You can't insult the flavors."
"Don't they have anything normal?" I sighed, "Like chocolate without flax seed in it?"
"There's vanilla." She offered.
Nodding I reached into my pocket and pulled out my wallet.
"I can get it." She said quickly.
"I'm blind not broke babe," I replied, "I've got it."
"Michael for the hundredth time I'm not your ba...."
"Next." A bored sounding guy called out cutting her off.
Shuffling forward until my thigh bumped into the counter, I flashed a smile, hoping someone was infront of me, and set down my wallet.
"Hello," I greeted, "Lovely evening isn't it?"
"I wouldn't know I've been stuck in here." The guy grunted, "What do you want?"
"Ladies first." I said, stepping aside.
I felt Spencer stand beside me.
She ordered Chocolote and mango on a cone, then stepped aside while I ordered two cups of vanilla. After that I paid, then let Spencer lead me outside to a bench out front to eat our ice cream and wait for our respective rides.
Savouring the creamy goodness on my tounge I listened to Lola lapping hers up at my feet.
"Are dogs supposed to eat icecream?" Spencer questioned.
"I don't think so." I replied, "But today is a special occasion."
"What's the occasion?" she asked.
"We're on a date." I answered.
"Michael!" she groaned.
"What?" I laughed, "Come on, this is romantic, you and me and my dog, sitting under the stairs, enjoying over priced, ice cream."
"How did you know there are stars?" Spencer asked sounding surprised.
"Well," I said, licking my spoon, "We met at Peggy's at six, and we were there for about an hour and a half, then we walked here, which was another half hour, which would make it around eight o'clock. Plus the way the wind is picking up and it's cooling down, and the way the light isn't hitting my face anymore I can tell the sun went down."
"Wow." Spencer breathed.
"What?" I questioned.
"I don't know," she mumbled, "I guess whenever I thought of blind people I used to assume they were...."
"Helpless?" I guessed, "Stupid? Incompetent? Clueless?"
"No," she said quickly, "I don't know I guess, you just surprise me."
