(Everly's POV)
I don't even stop to think. The creature narrows in on the others, a scream resounding from the girl we pulled from the water, Nova frozen in fear as Dela rears its head in their direction. Before I know what I'm doing, a large rock escapes my hand, flowing through the air in a precisely aimed arc only to come to a sudden stop in the eye of the beast. It thrashes out in pain; its attention is no longer on my best friend, instead, after its fit of pain, it turns to me.
I feel the hate radiating from the creature, but I also feel fear and an over-protective nature that overshadows the other emotions of the creature. I stand my ground, a moment of fear passing through me as I contemplate whether or not I really sensed the creature's emotions, or if I'm just crazy. She stops an arm's length from my being and I reach my hand out to her, somehow communicating to her that we meant no harm. I let her know that she should be safe if she were to stay hidden if people ever come to the lake and that my friends and I will protect her and her eggs; afterwards, she thanks me and returns to the lake.
"Everly?" I hear a sense of fear in Nova's voice.
I look over to my little group of friends, Nova looks nervous, Jax has a wide grin, Axel has returned to his werewolf book and the girl we rescued is unconscious on the beach. I step toward them and Nova actually takes a step back.
I stop where I'm at, "What's wrong Nova?"
"Y-Y-Your hair....it's bluish-white....and wings...."
I don't understand what she's talking about, she mentioned my hair though, so I pull a few strands over my shoulder to see what she's talking about. My usually short, dark brown hair is suddenly a bluish-white in color and has grown about a foot or two. I also look over my shoulder to see the wings that my best friend managed to indicate through her stuttering.
I step away from her, "I'm sorry, Nova, I didn't know!!"
I turn to run away, but I'm stopped by arms being carefully wrapped around my waist, avoiding any form of damage to my wings, "It's okay Everly, I was just surprised, I'm sorry." the warmth of Nova's body puts my mind to ease.
"Well then, I'm pretty sure August will be willing to hire you." Jax casually walks up to me as if I didn't just turn into a freak of nature.
"You're not afraid of me?"
Jax smiles and spreads his arms in a showy manner, "Well, you're not the only Deviant here. The jobs that Axel and I preform involve studying weaknesses of Deviants to stop those that give us a bad name."
"Us? You're Deviants? I thought all Deviants were evil, I'm so confused." I hold Nova close.
Jax sighs, "Your personality hasn't changed since you transformed, has it?"
"No."
"Exactly, a Deviant's personality doesn't change, people just tend to have evil hearts."
I know he's right, if he'd been evil, he had plenty enough chances to act on any evil intentions. I find myself curious about what he looks like as a Deviant, but I don't get a chance to ask; a van pulls up to the side of the lake near where we are congregated.
"Well, get ready to meet August, he's here to pick us up." Jax walks to Axel and helps him up, then retrieves his clothing and gets dressed.
I feel my face heat up as I realize my clothes are also on the beach and I have no idea how to put them on over my wings. I look down at myself, only to find that I'm not naked, but instead, I'm wearing an outfit that seems to match perfectly with my new wings. A sigh of relief passes my lips with the knowledge that I'm clothed appropriately.
