Everyone stared daggers at me and Umbra. One woman in the overturned bus placed a tighter grip on her child.
"Why...why do you have a Wolf puppy with you," one man asked me.
What was I supposed to say? "I was kidnapped by these two guys and they gave me a puppy?" Like anyone would believe that.
"Forget the Wolf," this woman said, "What was with that weird voodoo crap?"
I couldn't even answer that question at the time. The best I could possibly say was 'Oh, I was eating a sandwich and when I tried to grab it, I found out I could blow up stuff.' People were whispering to each other and it made me nervous. Umbra whimper feeling the same. So that's when I decided to do what every smart person would have.
I ran like hell.
Umbra was right next to me as soon as I bolted. I heard people yelling at me and talking to each other.
"Kid, get back here!"
"Somebody stop her!"
"Is she a Chaos?"
"Where's her family?"
"Someone call the police!"
I didn't stop running, ignoring my exhaustion and the screaming pain of my ankle. I knew how to get to where I was going from there, which I hoped wouldn't take to long.
It was getting dark. I guessed it was about six o'clock, maybe six thirty. I went of the road and started running in the trees on the side. I was just close enough to where I could make out the road to follow it.
After maybe forty minutes jogging and probably two and a half miles later, I collapsed. Umbra started licking my face immediately. I petted her head to let her know I was okay.
I lied on the ground for a few minutes before I built up the strength to crawl over to a tree. I put my hood over my head and curled up into a ball at the base. Umbra hobbled over, curled up next to me, and we both went to sleep.
It was very early when I woke up. The world still had that early morning bluish tint. I supposed it was about six in the morning. Umbra was still sleeping. I sat up and picked up Umbra. I suddenly patted over my jacket to check for Haylo and luckily she was still there. Yes, it's a she.
I placed a hand on the thin tree I slept under and brought myself to a standing position on one leg. Slowly I put down my injured ankle but found it could barely support my weight. I hissed in pain which somehow woke up Umbra. She licked my face and jumped from my arms.
I looked around to see if there was a stick I could use as a cane and saw a rather large one to my left.
"Umbra!" She looked at me and wagged her tail. I pointed to the stick and she followed my hand with her eyes. "Go get it!" She ran over and picked up a stick. Not the one I wanted. I shook my head and she picked up another one. Still not the one I wanted. This went on for about two minutes before she finally gets the right one. My stomach was growling loudly. I hadn't eaten since about two o'clock the previous day.
I was adjusting to the stick when I heard something off to my side. I ignored it. Maybe just a squirrel, I thought. To this day, I still cannot decide whether or not that was a good idea to ignore it. I know what, well who, it was now, but...I cannot figure out if it where a good thing I ignored him.
The world had returned to its normal color so I supposed it was about seven by the time u had gotten over the sound. I saw an asphalt road and knew I was getting close to the town my aunt and cousin lived in. I hoped my family was there waiting.
After an hour or so more of walking and breaks, we finally arrived in town. I had picked up Umbra and hid her in my jacket when I saw a house. It was early and I was sure it was Saturday so there weren't many people out. I was happy for that. I still had to be careful, though.
I recognized this street and knew that my aunt lived two over. It wasn't long before I arrived at the two story house. I put Umbra down next to me.
"Okay girl," I said, "Time to meet the family. Hopefully."
