The soldiers stood in front of us. They were our soldiers, so we hoped they'd come with good news. They stayed quiet but began splitting us up. Women to one side, men to another, girls over seven to one side, boys over seven to another. The little kids stayed out of the way. We were set in one straight line within our groups. Finally, a soldier spoke.

"When we come to you, summon your curatrix. All not willing or unable to will be arrested, children under seven exempt. Your faith from then on will be determined by a judge. No trial."

Well damn. I thought. Kaysee looked at me. Her puppy-like brown eyes were worried. "I can give you my sword when they come to you," she whispered.

"You might get in trouble," I whispered back, "Don't worry; I have a plan." For twenty grueling minutes we stood there. I saw Nik look at me. He notched his arrow to let me know he would fight to keep me here. I shook my head to tell him that wouldn't be called for.

A soldier came to me. "Summon," he said. I stared evenly at him. "Look little girl, I don't want to have to take you away. Don't be difficult and summon your curatrix."

I closed my eyes and put my hands behind my back. When I opened my eyes and held my hands up like I was waving. "Oops, looks like I couldn't summon it," I said with an emotionless face and monotonous voice. Kaysee and a few others giggled.

"Well you know what that means," the soldier said. "If you come with me without a fight your chances of being dismissed are higher."

I kept my blank expression and voice. "Oh I don't plan on fighting but I'm not coming with you." Before he could react I turned and ran. I swept my arm in a cutting motion and became enveloped in the all too familiar darkness.
