Castiel grew weary waiting for the date of his surgery, but on the day of his pre-op his spirits began to lift. In the back of his mind thoughts swirled like an oncoming storm, but Dean mediated and settled it all. It almost made him ashamed that he was doing this, all for Dean. Though in moments when Dean kissed him, resting their heads together in quiet peace, he decided that the surgery was in everyone's best interest. He thought of getting a job, finally and settling in with Dean. Of course, he could do all of that now, but it gave him another reason to want the surgery. Soon, it became more of a need.
Dean held his hand tightly, appearing more nervous than even Cas. Under his belt were so many scars and wounds and broken bones that had never healed right, but there he was. Worrying about a simple surgery that he wasn't even going to be having. He worried for Cas, every possible situation running through his head like a clip on repeat. Wanting so badly for Cas to come out alright, with his stunning blue eyes his new connection to the world that surrounded him, Dean worried himself sick.
Nervous scratches and picks of skin traced up and down Dean's arms, it had become a bad habit in the time that Cas lay still and thinking in the bed, ready to be wheeled away to the operating room.
The sheets were warm and a thin cotton robe hung over Castiel's shoulders. At a different time, Dean might have flashed him a flirty smile and taken advantage of the loose-fitting robe that was only accompanied by a pair of boxer shorts. But now he was jumpy and skittered about the hospital, taking sips out of his flask when a nurse wasn't keeping a keen eye on the tall, nervous man who stood too close to their patient.
They were escorted down more hallways, and into a final room where the would wait, Castiel for his surgery, and Dean; the inevitable. Tentatively, Dean flexed his hand and took Castiel's in it. Castiel took a seat on the bed, his heart racing, slowed only by the quiet comfort of Dean Winchester's thumb running circles on his palm. Cas leaned his head on Dean's broad shoulder. Dean sighed.
" You think they'll let me in the room while you're in there? " he asked, sarcasm and comforting humor ringing clear in his tone.
" Oh yeah, probably. " Cas retorted, their banter providing an adequate distraction from what would come of the future.
" Actually, I hear they're going to let you help. Make a few incisions, maybe hold my hand through it. " He teased, but brought Dean's hand to his lips, brushing them along his knuckles.
" You're an ass. " Dean muttered quietly, though his tone didn't match the words that he spoke. His tone spoke volumes, voicing his worry and deep-rooted feelings for Cas. It was a simple surgery, but this obviously meant so much to Cas. He had dreamed of sight for so long, and always wondered what would be the first thing he saw. After he met Dean, he decided that it would in fact be him.
A short red-headed woman in her mid forties lifted the safe guard of the hospital bed, and in mere seconds, Cas was being wheeled away from Dean, a sinking feeling settling in as Dean waved slowly.
They told him to breathe deeply, and think of somewhere he'd rather be. So in long, dragging breaths, Castiel went under with thoughts of Dean. The blackness clouded him, and he slept heavily as the surgeons and nurses carefully went through the process of returning his sight.
A soft melody that he had heard on the way to the hospital stuck in his mind, playing softly in his subconscious as the surgery went on.
I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man and my world is pale.
When a blind man cries, Lord, you know
there ain't no sadder tale.
Had a friend once in a room,
had a good time but it ended much too soon.
In a cold month in that room
we found a reason for the things we had to do.
