“Master Faraa!” The voice came through the tunnel which lead back to civilisation. Faraa and Gaius were deep in conversation with one of the Utopian theoretical physicists about the apparent gateway that had opened and the fact that it carried atmosphere with it - this gave Laurant hope that they had at least survived the trip into deep space.
“What is it?” Faraa replied, annoyed at the interruption. The young Skry soldier was out of breath and clearly shaken.
“Sir… It’s Dr Day”. Dr Hammond was beside them in seconds.
“Where the hell is he!?” She demanded.
“Ma’am, we found him at his home”.
“He’s at home? At a time like this!?” She was getting close to irrational anger.
“Yes, but…” The young Skry soldier looked to the ground, shaking his head as if to try and force an image from his mind.
“He’s dead”.
Silence.
“He was found with an empty bottle of pain medication and initial scans indicate an overdose”. Dr Hammond clutched a hand to her heart in shock.
“But… but he’s never been…” She was looking at Gaius, Faraa and the Skry solider. She removed her glasses, held them in one hand and stared at the floor.
“I can’t believe… why would he…?”
“Gaius” Faraa’s voice remained calm and strong. “Please accompany this solider to Dr Day’s residence and report back here in two hours with your findings”.
“Of course. Dr Hammond, are you going to be alright?” Gaius asked the shocked woman. She didn’t reply.
“Dr Hammond?” Faraa asked. “Dr Hammond, I need to to help me piece together what has happened here - for the sake of those that we can still save. Are you still with us?”. Her head snapped back up to meet Faraa’s gaze and she placed her glasses back on.
“Yes” She said curtly, and returned to the device.
