Chapter Eleven: Talk
Avery Nickels Reporting for Duty
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes before opening the door to Captain Russell’s room. Turning the knob I opened the door to see Captain Russell at a desk going over paper work with a pen in his mouth. I knocked on the door, Captain Russell looked up.
“You wanted to see me Captain Russell?” I said as I stepped into the room and the door closed behind me.
“Ah Avery yes, take a seat.” I pulled out the chair across from Captain Russell’s desk and sat down. I was nervous and agitated. I didn’t want to tell the tale of Captain Kurt’s death...I couldn’t even bare to remember snapping the necks of those Ronaz... Looking up from my hands back at the man who was now my Captain I found Russell smiling.
“Are you worried I’ll ask you about how Captain Kurt died?” Captain Russell asked me. I nodded. Captain Russell laughed and put down his pen that he had taken out of his mouth and had begun to play with in his hands.
“Yeah.” I said. Captain Russell shook his head before putting his head in his hands.
“I don’t want you to recall that moment. Actually I called you here to offer you a position.” Surprise surged through me at his words, offer me a position? But I had hardly been on this ship for a month... let alone two weeks...
“What kind of position are you talking about?” I asked. Captain Russell presented a form in front of me. The words popped out at me, my heart practically stopped.
Form of Agreement
Position: First Officer of Captain Russell Rulo
Offer of Position to: Avery Nickels
I stared at the paper blankly, me the first officer? But I had far less experience than all the others aboard this ship, not to mention I was a newbie to the Edogon. Looking back up from the dotted line where I would put my signature I gaped at Captain Russell.
“Why are you offering this to me?” My voice was a little harsher than I had wanted it to be. Captain Russell didn’t look shocked about how surprised I was at all.
“Because I like you Avery and I think you’re the best for the job. Sure you may be new to the Edogon. But you also entered the academy two years before you were supposed to and graduated two years before you were supposed to. With straight A’s the whole way. You’re a remarkable person and I find you the best for this job. If I was to be ordered onto a Ronaz ship like Captain Kurt was I’d feel safe and not have a worry if I had you as my first officer.” Captain Russell explained to me. I looked back down at the paper that was beckoning me to print my name on the dotted line...to become a first officer.
“I don’t know... there’s other people who must be waiting for this position to fall into their hands. There are people who have earned the position, not me.” I mumbled, my eyes still glued to the paper. Captain Russell laid a pen down before me, tempting me even more.
“Just sign it and agree to be my first officer Avery. Because Avery, you are the best person for the job.” Hesitantly I reached for the pen, allowing my fingers to curl around it as my other hand removed the cap and pulled the paper closer.
