Chapter Eighteen: Maybe
Dune Quinn Reporting for Duty
“Dune the pod’s part way done. We’re to go check up on it and see if all the technology is in check.” I reluctantly looked away from Avery who stood in the hallway confused back over at Brina who was lightly tapping my shoulder.
“Yeah, I’ll be there in a few seconds I just need to do something quickly.” I said, Brina nodded and headed off down the hall to the Mechanics area. I walked over to Avery who was now leaning against the wall with her hand over her mouth and a glazed look over her eyes. I found myself now having a blank mind, what had I intended to say to her in the first place?
“Hey, what’s wrong?” Were the words I decided on using as I too leaned against the wall. I didn’t think I should touch her right now, so I kept my hands folded across my chest.
“Um well...Captain Russell’s ill...” Avery said, sounding confused, almost as if she didn’t know if she should be telling me about this or not.
“Is it bad?” I asked, trying to keep her flowing. I could tell that Captain Russell being ill was only part of what was bugging her.
“Fairly, they say...they say it may even kill him Dune! He just became captain, and in no way am I ready to be captain yet. Everyone keeps saying be prepared for the worst but...how can I be prepared for the worst when I just feel mentally able to do so?” Avery suddenly started going into hysteria now, tears rolling out of her eyes. Shocked I pulled her into my arms and hugged her as she just stood there with her hands over her face, trying to stop the tears.
“It’s okay. I know that even if Captain Russell does die, if it comes to that and you have to take over you’ll be just fine. Even if you aren’t mentally prepared yet, because you’re the amazing Avery Nickels.” I said while rubbing Avery’s back in a soothing way. Avery quieted down pretty quick, I was pretty sure she still wasn’t okay but she pushed me away.
“Go Dune, you have work to do. I shouldn’t be bothering you when work has to be done.” I grabbed a hold of Avery’s wrist and pulled her back quickly to give her a peck on the forehead and one last hug before I stepped away from her and was tempted to do anymore.
“It’s alright; I’m your boyfriend after all.” I said, and then turned down the hallway before I could see that smile show up on Avery’s face. It seemed that I had to keep explaining that fact to her, even though she had been the one to ask me out.
Oh well, Avery had more than enough on her mind right now. And I should be the least of her worries; after all no matter how much I cared about her now. When she found out about that bet, she’d be gone from my arms forever.
We were all gathered around the ‘pod’ looking it over and checking for any malfunctions. From what I had seen all the technology and mechanics part had been done extremely well and needed no work what so ever. The silver metal structure of the ‘pod’ had been done expertly, of course and the technology was extremely up to date. We had even installed a few new ideas that had been made up while working on old technology systems for the ‘pod’. And the pilot and co-pilot’s seats were wonderful, made of expensive black leather. As for the five beds that had been imported, the heating systems and automatic sliding doors were all in check.
