Chapter Thirteen: Supernova

Avery Nickels Reporting for Duty

Night time was the only time that I found the ship was actually nice and quiet. So maybe that’s why it was my favourite part of my day. I looked down both sides of the hallway before slipping out of my room and heading towards the elevator...

“Hey who’s there?” Oh shit. Picking up my speed the elevator doors suddenly opened beside me and before I could scream or anything. Someone dragged me in and the doors closed. Muffling into the hand I was suddenly released. Turning around to face my kidnapped I found Dune Quinn.

“Wha, what are you doing at this time of night?” I asked. Dune chuckled.

“I could ask you the same thing.” I blushed as I realized Dune was right. He could ask me the same thing. I looked at the elevator’s button pad then, Dune had pressed all the buttons. Thus sending us on a long elevator ride until we finally came back to the dorms, I guess he did that to avoid whoever was in the hallways for longer? Sighing I looked back at Dune to see him resting on the elevator’s railing. He was still in his combat suit despite what time it was, but I guess his combat suit blended in better with the night than his night ware. And for some reason it felt very weird being in this long elevator ride all alone with him. But maybe that was because of my guilt, guilt that I had kissed him back when I had been dating Stark. Well either way this silence was deafening and it felt like it could let everything lose. Reveal the fact that I had been thinking about Dune, a whole lot lately. My confusion over if he was really bad or the most charming guy ever. I wanted to escape this elevator now...be released from this silence...the drumming of my heart beating so loud, the quiet scared me, why hadn’t I noticed that before? Maybe because before I had never thought about how much the quiet could scream the truth. On the tip of my tongue though, there lay a question that I desperately wanted to ask Dune. And as he turned his head to look at me, I knew Dune knew that I had something I wanted to ask him. Taking a deep breath I scooted closer to him and I too leaned on the elevator’s railing.

“Hey Dune...” I began. Dune turned his head to look at me, letting me know I had his full attention.

“Yes Avery?” Dune replied. I bit my lip and looked away. Could I really ask him this, could I be so blunt? The answer was yes.

“Why are you being nice to me lately?” I asked. Dune looked confused and crossed his arms.

“Whatever do you mean by that? I’ve always been nice to you Avery, since I first meet you. Isn’t that right?” Dune answered. That was true; it had been my own pure disgust to his player ways that claimed he was rude and awful. Dune had never once actually been rude or mean to me. Perhaps it was all in my head? Because over this little amount of time that I had actually spent with Dune he did nothing but treat me kindly. When I was too tired but didn’t want to quit, he forced me too. Dune knew that if I overworked myself it’d be bad for my health. In all it seemed he put my best interests first... What right had I to judge him just because he was popular with the ladies? What kind of awful person had I become?

“Oh. Right. Well then Dune...what exactly do you want from me?” I asked looking back up at him, his eyes shining with unspoken secrets and past memories. I had urge to reach out my hand and just hold it against his cheek as I stared into his eyes, but I did no such thing. Instead Dune surprised me, he suddenly popped up in front of me and like before laid his hands on the wall of the elevator. He looked sincerely into my eyes. I don’t know what it was, but something in his eyes was screaming at me.
