Another month went by and Kaycee lost count of how long they weren't together. She would be lying if she said things were horrible — it wasn't amazing either, but things kind of fell into a routine.

They were not spending time together but they weren't avoiding each other either. He would sometimes come over to her classes to say hi and ask about Jia, and they would talk for five minutes. Or sometimes some parents paid Kaycee and she would have to go to his office to deliver the money, and they would talk for a minute or two about his fish and how he finally unboxed all of his things in the apartment.

If you looked from the outside, it would seem like they had settled down to the idea of not being together. It would look like they settled down and accepted that they would never be able to be more than acquaintances — but just if you looked from the outside.

Sean had unpacked everything in his apartment but he still hated the place, well, not the place itself but the fact he was alone. And Kaycee, she was rocking the single-mom-look — 'single mom' because Gabe would show up just once in a while — but she hated the fact that she went back to doing this alone.

For Kaycee, things kind of felt as lonely as when she was with Gabe... she had no one to share everything that happened with her and Jia... she had her friends and family but it wasn't the same as having someone to share the parenthood — like when she had Sean.

So yeah, if you looked on the inside you would find out pretty quickly that their hearts did not settle for the current situation. And I guess they required some distraction time.

It was Kaycee's birthday and she decided to give herself some time to relax and invited all of her family and some close friends to dinner at her house. At the moment Julien was doing a salad for everyone in her kitchen; Josh, Ken, and Devon were sitting at her couch, watching and talking about shark tank; Her sister and her mother were setting the table outside with the help of Bailey; Sean was outside by the grill with her father as the old man held his granddaughter in the arms.

The image and all of the noises were pure art to her heart, having everyone she loved in her house was everything she could want at any moment. She loved this house for all of the good memories she built with Jia, but it felt more like a home when there were more people in it than just the two of them.

"Are you happy?" Bailey asked, bringing her back from her thoughts — the other was holding plates.

Kaycee smiled. "I'm."

"I'm glad you are." She answered hugging her quickly with one arm. "You deserve a little break, but also..."

"What now?" She asked, afraid of what was coming.

"Here." She took a birthday card from her pants pocket. "It's from Hani."

"Bails..."

"I know, okay? I know you have other things to worry about than a messy friendship but she misses you and she's sorry for everything." Kaycee sighed taking the card in her hands. "I'm not saying you should go back to being best friends but it's been a long time and we all grown so much... she misses you and misses Jia, maybe you should think about taking this one off of your shoulders, so the world can slowly feel a little lighter to you."
