______________________________

It was scary to be sitting in this quiet room as he read all of the pages of the deal — the room had glass walls with a gorgeous view of Los Angeles. A long table, on one side, was Kaycee and her attorney, on the other side was Gabe and his attorney.

He was reading the deal again for the last time, at every new second he took it was another beat her heart skipped.

After fifteen minutes of reading, he finally finished, his eyes never finding hers — it is now or never, she thought, either he was staying or it would be goodbye forever.

He asked his lawyer for the pen and she could see his hands were trembling when he signed his name on the line. And just like so it was official, he was no longer her father.

Gabe and his attorney left before her. She stayed inside a little longer to gather all of the documents. Kaycee left the building while talking on the phone with her mom, updating her about everything thing.

She stepped out of the building and turned off, she looked to the side so she could cross the street and found Gabe sitting on a bench — his eyes found hers. Kaycee sighed and before thinking twice, sat by his side.

They stayed in silence, watching the street, for a solid five minutes.

"Are you happy?" He asked, looking at her.

"Are you?" She questioned back, and they just stared at each other for a minute.

He didn't answer, drifting his eyes from hers. "It's the right decision... He's gonna be a better father than I."

"So it was always about, Sean, hun?" She said.

"I thought about giving up, about staying." He said. "Then I remember a conversation I had with Sean."

Kaycee raised her eyebrows and he kept going. "He was willing to co-exist with me in this family, for the sake of Jia.... the fact that I could never do the same gave me all the answers I needed."

He looked at her again. "I don't have what it takes to put her in front of my needs, I don't even want to... he's ready to do that." Gabe chuckles. "That's why I signed the paper, I understand that she deserves something I can't give her, something I'm not sure I could ever give."

"I was never asking you to give something." She said.

"You weren't asking Sean either, but he was giving anyway." He said. "I never wanted... you were right. We were young and we panicked when you got pregnant, we didn't think about our opinions. This could've been different from the start."

"We really panicked, didn't we? I mean, we got married." They laughed.

"My mom would have killed me if we didn't get married." He said and they laughed more.

"How is she with all of this, how is your family?" She asked.

"You don't have to worry, they will respect my decision and no one is going to bother you guys." He said. "You are free to live as you wanted."

"And you are too." She said, he nodded while they shared a smile.

They stood up and he extended his hand to her. "Have a good life, Kaycee Rice."

She smiled, shaking his hand as she answered: "Have a good life, Gabe."

And then he left, without looking back and Kaycee sighed, relieved — this conversation gave her more security than any of the papers in her hand. Now she was sure that this messy chapter of her life was finally over.

She was getting inside her car when her phone started ringing.

Fiancé ❤️

"Hi" She answered.

"Don't even tell me what happened,He said on the other side of the line. "No matter the results, we are doing the same thing. I'm taking Jia to the beach, I have snacks and clothing for you. Meet us at our place."

She smiled big. "Okay. I'll be there in thirty."

"Okay, love you."

"Love you too."

Kaycee drove to the beach feeling lighter than she had ever been, all the weight she had been carrying was leaving her back slowly.

She walked through Venice beach until she found "their place". She looked at the bench and remembered the last time they've met in here — when she told him she was pregnant and broke both of their hearts.

Now her eyes filled with tears at the new scene: Sean sitting on the bench with her daughter beside him, he had so many bags and beach things but it was also trying to share ice cream with Jia — it was a great new memory for their place, and had she never thought they'd be here after the last one.

Sean looked up and his eyes found Kaycee's — he grabbed Jia's hand and they walked to her.

"Is it over?" He asked while Kaycee grabbed Jia in her arms so he could carry the rest more comfortably. She nodded.

"Actually, I think it's just starting." She said making him smile, before turning to her daughter — all dirty from ice cream. "Can I have some?"

Jia shared with Kaycee. "Awn, thanks, baby."

They found a place by the water and eventually set everything up. They've had fun in the water for a while, ate, even more, ice cream and now the sun was starting to set — the sky begging to share its blue with some pink and orange.

Jia was covered in sand, playing with sand toys right in front of them.

Kaycee got distracted for a while, thinking about this day and thinking about everything that leads to this day — She looked at Jia and then at Sean, smiled and a tear ran down her cheek.

"Hey, there's something wrong?" He asked, resting his arm around her waist and pulling her closer — with one hand, he cleaned her tear away.

With a tender grip, she held his face and gave him a soft kiss. "Nothing," she sighed. "And it's so good to be able to answer that."

He smiled, giving her another quick but soft kiss. And she repeated, "Nothing is wrong."

It was a happy tear because she made it, she faced hell on earth but she finally made it to where she wanted to be. She finally made it to where she belonged — The only weight she would carry now was love.

Kaycee could finally rest in the arms of love at last...

and she would rest in the arms of love.
