CHAPTER ELEVEN: SIX INCH HEELS
This was the sign she needed. In the days she couldn't speak, she silently prayed for Oscar to give her any indication that he still lived on, and this was definitely the wake up call she needed from his restless soul. No more would she starve herself in a state of decay, but she promised to the second heartbeat in her womb that she'd feet it organically and love it unconditionally.
Water dripped down harshly past her shoulders, through aphotic hair, and continuing over her slim stomach. It expanded barely to prove that another being resided within her. Two heartbeats within one slender body. Her back ached as her entire weight relied upon it.
Caroline looked down and visualised stretched skin with red vein-like tendrils seeping across the sides, reminding her of an eyeball. Soft white skin, red lines drawn along it. Her heart banged loudly against her chest, the rain from the sky screaming louder, trying to overpower all other noise.
She walked alone in the downpour, beknown to the prying eyes that could quite possibly have belonged to assassinating Italians, but through the water, she smirked. Even the foreigners knew that she was a force to be reckoned with, and from their countless of fact files against the woman, each fine print informed them that she was ruthless - perhaps even more dangerous than her cynical husband.
If she had every known failure in her life, it didn't show. Everything from the way she held herself, to the way she spoke, to that look of unassailable confidence in her eye said she could do it - almost anything but keep a secret. If what Polly had said was true, then she and Thomas were indeed expecting yet another child, and she couldn't wait to tell him, whether it was factual information or not.
"Thomas!"
Caroline's sickly sweet tone boomed across the entire floor of the boxing station. The men who pounced about in the rings put aside their gloves aside and breathed a wistful sigh as the beautiful brunette strode past them in search for her husband. Then, they looked away as the sound of her six inch heels stopped clicking across the concrete, for if they were caught staring a moment longer, their eyes would be gauged out by Thomas, and Caroline would simply giggle in amusement.
Surprised, Thomas welcomed his wife into his arms. "What are you doing out in this weather?"
"Aren't you just glad to see that I am not cooped up in our bedroom, knocking on heaven's door?"
Thomas glanced to the men beside him and spoke with caution. "Yes, so this must be important. Come on, let's go."
Hand in hand, Caroline and Thomas made their way up the stairs and eventually made it to one of their several offices. While she leaned against the desk and traced her finger over it's wooden surface, Thomas contained the privacy by closing the blinds before he walked towards his wife to place a gentle hand on her knee.
"Before you say that I am crazy, I just want you to know that it has been confirmed." Caroline spoke with a disbelieving grin. "Oscar is in fact out there somewhere and when I asked him for a sign, on a whim, I begged Polly to do my leaves and she told me that I'm pregnant."
His brain stuttered for a moment and his eyes took in more light than he expected - every part of him went on pause while his thoughts caught up. After a minute to digest Caroline's words, Thomas gulped apprehensively.
He thought, because he had grown up in the violent streets of poverty he had seen everything. But nothing could prepare him for the life of a soldier. He have seen friends and allies die. But he had done the same to enemy soldiers. He either had to die in combat or live with the guilt of what his hands have done.
