That's when Peter heard it. The gunshot.

The crack of the bullet echoed in his ears, and he froze in his tracks.

He heard a loud thump from the other room. May's room.

Peter ran into the corridor and he was horrified by what he saw - his aunt, his only living family member, bleeding out on the wooden floor in front of him.

Peter couldn't move - he was in total shock. He heard a door slam in the distance and he flinched, and it brought him out of his trance.

He rushed over to the woman, who was no longer breathing, and had no pulse. He reached into his back pocket, and pulled out his cell phone, his bloody hands trembling as he punched in the numbers.

"911, what's your emergency?"

"I-it's my a-aunt. S-she's been s-shot," Peter spluttered, his voice breaking. He couldn't believe it. This must be one massive nightmare, right? And in a minute he would wake up screaming, and May would come running into his room, completely unscathed.

"I'm sending someone now. Where are you?"

Peter gave him their address, hoping that the operator on the other line could make out what he was saying through his sobs.

"Someone's on their way, but people can bleed out in just five to eight minutes, so we need you to cover the wound with a cloth and put pressure on it, it will reduce the amount of blood loss."

"S-she's not breathing."

"They're nearly there kid, it will be okay."

The ambulance crew arrived, approximately seven minutes later. They lightly pushed a distressed Peter aside, and started hooking May up to loads of machines. However, after fifteen minutes of panicked movements, she was still flatlining. There was nothing they could do. She was gone.

Peter ran out of the apartment before the paramedics pronounced her time of death. He could not let them take him to child services. He had no where to go.

"Peter, you seem to be in quite a lot of distress, would you like me to call Mr Stark?" Karen asked him.

"Y-es p-please."

Peter had one more emergency contact - Tony Stark. However, it was 2:34 am, and he wasn't sure that he would pick up.

"Calling Mr Stark."

He picked up after just two rings.

"Kid? What are you doing? It's half two in the morning!" Tony said, clearly confused. He paused after hearing Peter's sobs through the phone.

"What's happened, Pete?"

"S-she's gone. Aunt May. She's gone."

"I'll be right there, kid."

And then he hung up, and it was quiet, the only sounds being fading sirens in the distance.
