  SLENDER

I stare at Von, waiting for him to speak. Whether to agree or to fight. I really hope he chooses to agree, he knows I cannot control my anger. And I don't want to hurt him. Finally, he nods and I relax, feeling the tentacles in my back relax as well. I straighten my jacket. "Very well," I say. "You are excused."

He turns and opens the door, but just before he leaves, he looks over his shoulder and says, "I never asked for you as a father."

I stand, shocked, as he leaves and closes the door behind him. I continue looking at the door.

"That's all I ever wanted to be to you."

I walk into the sitting room to see Jack eating on the sofa.

"Jack," I say dangerously. "What are you doing?"

Jack pauses right before he takes another bite of kidney he's eating. "Uhh, nothing?"

I breathe in deeply. "Get. Off. The. Couch."

Jack quickly gets off the couch and runs to the kitchen. I walk to the sofa and look at the cushions to see spots of blood where Jack was sitting.

  That little...

I take a deep breath, hold it, then let it out. I turn and head towards the kitchen when I think better of it.

"TOBY!" I yell. I wait until I see Toby skamper up to me.

"Yes, boss?" he asks nervously.

I look around to see if we are alone, then lean down to Toby's height. "I need you to keep an eye on Von," I whisper to him. Toby looks at me through his goggles in amazment. I continue. "No one is to know about this, not even Von. Keep your distance and report back to me at the end of each day."

Toby nods enthusiastically. "Of course, but can I ask why?"

I stand straight then straighten my suit jacket. "No."

Toby nods and saunters off. Then I turn and head back to my study.
