Reader POV
Being born blind, My other senses became heightened over time. I could smell and hear better than the average sighted person. I also developed a deeper sense of awareness about my surroundings even if I couldn't see them. I could sense things around me, basically. For example, it was actually quite difficult to sneak up on me even if I didn't hear the person coming first. And for the first 14 years of my life, I lived in the same house, the same small town that never changed, the same small primary school. But my mother recently lost her job and got an offer she couldn't possibly refuse for a good-paying job inside of Trost. I was uprooted, thrown for a loop as we packed everything in our small house up and moved. My entire routine was changed, and now, I would have to start all over making new friends, learning my way around a new house, new streets, a new school. Not to mention that this would be my first year of high school. This was my worst nightmare come true all at once. I didn't think it could get worse than this though.
Boy, was I wrong... Let's just say that city kids were more closed-minded, less friendly to people who are different. They cast aside things they didn't understand, shunning things that didn't fit in seamlessly with the normal routine of the rest of the kids who already had friends... Kids that could see... And so my first year of high school in a new town with no friends started off rough and I gained a slew of bullies for doing nothing but existing as a person with a defect. I couldn't see and they thought it was absolutely hilarious to pick on me for it, try to scare me or hit me or hide things from me. Halfway through the year, I was used to it, however, the occasional hair pulls or shoves in the hall turned into actual beatings after school. I'd always go home with bruises and sore spots but I just accepted it as what my life would be like here in the city. Nobody ever tried to help me, that was, until one day...
Levi POV
I fished a cigarette out of my pocket along with my lighter as I walked around the back of the storage shed for the sports equipment. Leaning against the wall I placed the butt of the fag between my lips, letting it hang there as I fiddled with my crappy lighter to get it to work. Just as I lit up, I heard what sounded like a fight going on just around the corner from where I stood. I put away my lighter and took a drag off my cigarette, blowing out the smoke in a slow exhale as I took the stick away from my lips, holding it between two fingers on my left hand. I pushed myself away from the wall and stepped around to see who it was that was getting their ass beat this time. I thought it was just going to be that bratty first year Yeager getting his ass handed to him by that horse-looking guy, what was his name again? Jean.
My eyes widened a fraction in surprise to see two first-year boys I didn't know beating on another first-year. A girl no less. I watched for a minute, unable to comprehend the scene before me. She laid on the ground, curled up and covering her head with her arms as they kicked her sides and stomach. Her eyes were screwed shut and her school skirt was torn in a few places from being pulled at but they didn't appear to have touched her inappropriately beyond that. She made no move to fight back and when I heard her begin to whimper in pain my body moved on its own.
I charged forward with a deadly glare at my two underclassmen. "Knock it off you shitty brats," I growled at them, swinging my left hand up to slam my still lit cigarette into the taller one's cheek, effectively putting it out on his skin. My hand followed through with a punch that sent him to the ground before he could kick the girl again. The other boy looked down at me with a scared look. I shifted my glare to meet his eyes and he backed up a step for every step I took toward him. "Get lost." I snarled and he ran off as I turned back to the boy on the ground whining about how I burned him. I kicked his side harshly and he grunted in pain, moving to crawl away from the scene as he tried to stand up.
When they were both gone, I walked over to the girl's side and crouched down, offering her my hand but she just stayed curled up covering her head. She hadn't opened her eyes yet either but I could see her body shaking, from pain or fear I couldn't tell. "Oi, I'm not gonna hurt ya," I reassured her with a frustrated sigh. I watched as she opened her eyes slowly. They would have been a beautiful (e/c) color but they looked dull, almost like a milky film covered them and her pupils didn't dilate at all despite that the sun was actually shining on her from this angle. I found it extremely odd. What was wrong with her eyes? It became clear when she pushed herself up into a seated position and looked in my direction but her eyes never met mine or even my face. They looked directly in front of her which was just to the right of my head at the tree behind me. "Hey, look at me would ya?" I said though I had already deduced that she was blind. Her face turned slightly to the left at the sound of my voice. Her hearing seemed to be pretty decent if she was able to pinpoint me just by the sound of my voice even though right now it was easy since I was so close to her.
