5. Whatever It Takes

This was really fun to write, it brought back some of the same excitement  and other feels from when I wrote similar themed chapters in my big Levi X Reader book, Can't Get Along!

52nd Expedition Beyond the Walls

Levi POV

I glanced down at the ring on my left hand as I rode my horse at the head of my squad. This would be the first expedition since I'd married the woman I loved. To say I was worried about her was an understatement; I knew she had the skills to hold her own out here against any titans her squad might have come across, but considering everything in the past that had happened I couldn't help but fear for her safety. Everyone I had ever come to care for before had died a horrible death of some sort. (Name) had been with her squad on the left flank of the formation while mine was toward the front right and most flares that had popped up during our journey to the supply base we were supposed to be setting up had come from the left. But despite the clenching I felt in my chest as my mind wandered to all the horrible possibilities of what may have happened to my wife, I couldn't allow myself to be distracted until we were once again within the safety of the walls of Trost District where I could search for her among the rest of the soldiers who made it back from this expedition.

It was easier said than done to focus on my surroundings as I kept pace with Eld and Petra as we rode our horses at full tilt to proceed with the retreat that had been called nearly three hours ago by Commander Erwin. "Captain, a black flare from the right forward flank." Petra's warning shout over the drumming sound of our horses' hoofbeats brought me back to the world around me and I looked over to where she had indicated. "Eld, you fire the flare." I instructed plainly, turning back to Petra. "When we reach that area, Petra, I want you to send a message straight to Erwin that our squad is dealing with the abnormal." She nodded curtly and we continued our ride straight for the flare that had gone up ahead of us. This situation was useful in distracting me from my own worries but it likely wouldn't last long, we were rapidly approaching the home stretch back to the outer gate of Trost District. I could even see the top of Wall Rose on the horizon now.

We came up on a group of two squads fighting a single twelve meter tall abnormal. They had gotten one of it's arms chopped off at the elbow by the time we were in range for use of our maneuver gear. "Go now, Petra." I ordered the girl and she quickly yanked her horse around to ride back where we had come from to avoid getting in the crossfire on her way to the command squad's position with the message I had told her to give. Gunther and Oruo broke off from Eld and me to flank the titan as it stomped around, flailing it's remaining arm in the air to grab at the other soldiers trying to attack it.

Three Hours Prior

Reader POV

I watched the smoke flare in the distance shoot up straight into the air and breathed a small sigh of relief. We were retreating. This expedition had me on edge since I readied my horse this morning alongside Levi. I had gotten one of those gut feelings that something was going to go wrong today but with the call for a retreat in place and my mind wandering off to seeing Levi safe and sound inside the walls of Trost, that feeling in my gut settled down.
