Chapter 5 – No Escape

I smiled nervously, standing up and turning to face him. “I guess you’ll just have to change me then, won’t you?”

Kuza stood and smiled back down at me. “I guess I will.”

“Not on my watch, vampire.” I spun around, Kuza’s arms around me tightly still…to see an ex-member of my clan.

My eyes widened in surprise and dismay as I beheld my former friend. “Hello… Annalise…”

“Hello…” A cruel smile tugged at one side of her face. “Selina…” Annalise smirked, toying absentmindedly with the gnarled, oaken wand se held between her fingers. “Long time no see.”

“Yes, well, running off the way you did doesn’t seem to have helped our friendship any, now has it?” I huffed, folding my arms against my chest. “What are you doing here Annalise?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” she frowned, taking a half step forwards Kuza and I. “I’m here to save you.” She looked me over, her eyes stopping at the claiming mark on my neck. “Or, at least… what’s left of you…”

“You’ve no right to meddle in the affairs of others…” I tried to reason, my expression blank as I tried to figure out what her plan was. “No matter which Wiccan group you belong to.”

“Ordinarily, I would agree with you,” she nodded, twirling her wand and then gripping its handle firmly. “But when a sister of mine loses her way…” she looked up behind Kuza and I and I realised she wasn’t entirely alone. “It’s our job to either show her back to the path of light… or end her suffering.”

I chuckled darkly, unfolding Kuza’s arms from around my waist and raising my hand level with my head; watching her look from the ball of lightning in my hand to my face. “Over my dead body.”

She smirked as she sighed, nodding to someone briefly before turning her gaze back to me. “It may have to be…” and then she lunged, the line of light erupting from the tip of her wand crashing against the energy shield I’d summoned. She laughed, the spell she’d cast at me brightening. “You and I both know you can’t keep that up forever.”

I snarled, glancing over my shoulder as I heard Kuza growl; hissing as I saw the Warlock she’d brought with her. I turned back to Annalise, smiling cruelly. “I can keep it up long enough.”

She pouted, mocking me. “To do what?”

“This!” I shouted as I raised my hand above my head, the lightning I held sparking towards both Annalise and her Warlock friend…knocking them both to the ground. My heart raced as the spell died away, “I don’t want to hurt you, Annalise… but you came after us with no good reason as to why…”

“Oh, we had reason enough.” She gasped as she pulled herself to her feet. “Those who walk in the light should never mix with the darkness…”

“Oh, my old friend…” I sighed sadly as she straightened. “You already have…”

I cringed as she screamed a profanity at me, my hands coming up to cast a protective spell as she flicked her wand towards me again. I heard the sound of slashing flesh and turned, my right hand swinging round so the protective spell knocked the Warlock away from Kuza… my eyes trained on the stake that had barely missed his heart.

But, with the spell cast on two directions, Annalise was able to break through it; stunning me and then immobilising me with a gravity jinx.

“Selina!” I heard Kuza yell out to me and saw him fall to his knees beside me…but everything seemed a million miles away.
