Commerce City General Hospital
Laura woke up with a start.
She was lying on a pure-white bed. For a moment, she was at loss as to where she was.
“Hey, Laura, you’re awake!”
“Idiot, don’t be noisy!”
“Both of you are too loud.”
The voices sound familiar. Turning around, she saw her older sister wringing the necks of Rick, her childhood friend, and Joyce, her seatmate and confidante in school. Both her friends have a pained expression on their faces.
“Hey, sis!” Laura said, “Let ‘em go. I’m awake already.”
“Are you okay?” her sister rushed to her side, “You had us worried.”
“Yeah, I’m okay,” Laura said, “what happened, anyway?”
Rick looked at her, “You weren’t at the party last Friday.”
“Rick wondered why you were late, so he called me,” her sister explained, “It’s when we found out that you never got home.”
“You sure know how to throw an event,” Joyce said, “The party was cancelled and we all ended up looking for you. And you know where we found you? Right smack in the city playground, unconscious. We had to rush you to this hospital.”
Laura pieced the details together.
“Wait,” she asked Rick, “You said last Friday? What day is today?”
“Monday afternoon,” Rick said, “You’ve been out for more than three days. What happened?”
Laura frowned. She had absolutely no idea at all.
“I don’t know,” she admitted, “All I can remember is that I was walking home.”
“Maybe I should’ve accompanied you,” Rick said.
“And end up wreaking your party?” Laura pointed out.
“Your disappearing was enough to cancel my little gathering,” Rick retorted.
Laura clammed up from Rick’s words. She guiltily realized the mess she made.
“Sorry,” was all she could say.
“Nah,” Rick smiled, “It’s nothing big. We can always have a party next time.”
