“Congratulations, Juris,” Father Brian said, “Another Vessel was saved today.”
I have just arrived at the Magic Inquisition headquarters in order to submit my report. The priest was very happy at the way this mission turned out. While I do appreciate his recognition of my skills as Juris, I certainly wish he would give that same attitude to my normal form, Jaime. I cannot help it that the normal me acts too carefree for Father Brian’s comfort.
“I suppose so,” I replied somberly.
“Hmm? Why the long face? We just won another fight against Freya.”
“Sure, we won one today, but things have changed. Freya has just changed the rules of her game.”
“And so? We’d still win,” the priest declared, “We have you on our side.”
The priest laughed. I raised an eyebrow. Father Brian was certainly happy with this success, but there are times when occasions like these really do get into him.
“I doubt it,” I said, “last night was too close. If Lance wasn’t there to guard Laura Collins, then it’s all over. And I almost got him killed, too. I can’t risk that anymore.”
The priest stopped laughing. The fact that I almost failed certainly sobered him up.
“So, what are you going to do?” Father Brian asked, serious now.
I was quiet for a few moments. I knew what I need but I have to choose my words.
“We’ll need to form a new squad, Father Brian,” I quietly replied, “whose sole task is to fight her. And they must be the type Freya would love to have in her game and not kill.”
“Is that so?” Father Brian rubbed his chin, “I can arrange that. I’ve got a list of good candidates from the other squads. I can give you my recommendations.”
“No,” I shook my head, “your people will not be able to survive Freya, and you know that. I’ll be sourcing my squad mates from the outside. I have good friends who can do the job. And they are all Fusio users, too.”
“Are you sure? I mean, you are vouching for them but, I don’t know their abilities. Are sure they’ll survive against her?’
“Of course,” I looked at him, “They’re her friends, too.”
To be continued…
