Billy was still Billy, even with a bruised body and messed up face. He still held up his pride when he walked into the school, everybody gawking at him and his non-existing mullet and his face.
But Steve, who stood in the hallway frowned when he saw the Californian boy. Nancy was on his arm, talking his ear off but he didn't even listen, he just nodded and agreed, his eyes still following Billy.
Calm down. Calm down. Calm down.
This is what repeated itself in Billy's head. Of course he had seen Nancy and Steve in the hallway, and how she seemed so happily talking to him and standing so close to him that personal space was questioned. He felt Steve's eyes burning into the back of his head as he walked down the hallway.
But his blood was boiling and he somehow had to control himself to not go off. And he had no idea where this feeling came from. This burning rage on this stupid brunette girl on Steve's arm.
"The fuck you looking at, Sinclair?" He barked at the boy, making him and Max flinch as they saw the boy who seemed to fume with anger. "Are you okay?" Max asked, raising an eyebrow. Billy kept quiet, clenching his jaw. "Steve." El muttered, wiping her bloody nose. This girl was prone to have nosebleeds, wasn't she? "Shut the fuck up." He muttered, ramming his shoulder into Mike's shoulder as he passed the boy, making him stumble.
The group of teenagers were confused. Billy was so nice when they hung out privately and now he was acting like this? Maybe it's the school reputation? Maybe it's because of his father? That's at least what Max thought.
Steve stormed past the group, now anger rising within him. He could cope with Billy's strange mood swings but no one touches the kids. Even if it's a stupid bump in the shoulder.
"The Hell is going on with you, Hargrove?" Steve asked, his arms crossed as he watched the boy outside the building lighting his cigarette, taking a deep inhale. Steve could feel goosebumps rising on his arms as Billy's blue eyes looked at him. So much hatred and anger were mirrored in them as he looked at Steve. "None of your fucking business, Harrington." He barked, his knuckles turning white as he clenched one of his fists.
God, Billy didn't even know why he was acting like this. He hated those feelings rushing through him. The hate and anger and jealousy cursing through his veins felt like acid eating up his body.
"It's my business when you touch the kids." Steve said and he could hear Steve getting angry. But he didn't care. "Then tell your fucking kids not to look at me like I'm some kind of interesting animal. And tell your fucking prone to nosebleed girl to stay the fuck out of my damn head!" Billy said. He could feel his heart thumping against his chest as he took deep breaths. "Listen to me. I'm going to tell you this one time. Touch them again and I'll fucking end you, got it?" Steve said, stepping up to Billy. "Fuck you and fuck them kids-"
The next thing Billy remembered was falling to the ground and his cheek hurting like a bitch. Did Steve just fucking punch him? "I'm only gonna warn you once. Fucking watch what you say." Steve said through gritted teeth before leaving.
After that, Billy decided to skip. He couldn't bear seeing Steve's stupid fucking face or this fucking Wheeler girl. He was pretty sure he'd punch in Steve's face if he'd see him again.
Billy knew it wasn't right that he had snapped at Lucas. He even got along quite well with him when he was at Steve's. But now everyone just pissed him off. It had nothing to do with Lucas personally or the fact that he was dating his sister. But Billy just snapped and couldn't comprehend his own feelings.
"Oh William, dear! Is it good to see you!" The elderly woman smiled when she opened the door. "It's good to see you too, Doris. But how often did I tell you to call me Billy." Billy chuckled, his anger seemed to be gone.
Doris was his old neighbor. He used to do mown her lawn and help her with groceries, because well, she was already 83. And even though his father practically forced him to do that, he learned to love her. She took care of him after his dad would beat him up.
Doris was like his grandma, since his real ones hated him, and for Doris Billy was like the grandson she never had, since her daughter died when she was 4. And honestly, he had forgotten a bit about her since she moved, making him feel guilty.
"Aren't you supposed to be in school?" Doris asked, smiling as she sat him down onto the couch, disappearing into the kitchen. "Yes, but today has been a whole disaster." He sighed, letting his guard down as he looked at the fine China set she put down in front of him. "Talk to me William, what's going on?" She asked concerned as she put cake on the table, filling his cup with tea.
"Is it girl trouble?" Doris grinned as she lit up a cigarette, offering Billy one. He gladly accepted. "I don't know. I had a good day until I saw the person, I guess I like, with someone else and my feelings just went all over the place. I even yelled at my sisters boyfriend." He sighed, letting his fingers run through his hair. "Oh, you're in love, dear. Only love makes you this crazy." She smiled warmly. "No! No I'm definitely not in love with him-" he froze instantly, his heart pounding as he looked at Doris.
But she didn't say anything, only smiling softly at him. "What is his name?" She said, making Billy tear up. Doris was one of them most important people in his life and he was happy that she accepted it. Even if it slipped. "His name is Steve." "The Harrington boy? No wonder, he's a snack." Doris grinned, making Billy laugh out loud.
"It was good seeing you again, Doris. I'll make sure to come around more. Your cake was amazing, by the way." Billy smiled as he hugged the older woman. "Oh I sure hope so! And William", Billy stopped in his tracks, turning his head, "just go for it. Don't be scared. Tell him." She smiled before closing the door.
It was already 3pm when he left Doris' house. In 30 minutes the school would end. And since Doris talked some sense into him, he decided to apologize to Lucas and Mike.
When Max left the building, her hand intertwined with Lucas, he immediately ripped his hand out of hers making her look at him in confusion. His brown eyes just stared in front, his body language screaming fear. Max followed his gaze, seeing her brother leaning against his Camaro, once again smoking.
Max was angry that she'd go against his boyfriend and her friend, so she grabbed Lucas' hand and stomped over to Billy. "Billy-" "I'm sorry Lucas." The whole group got quiet and even Max, who was ready to yell at him quiet down. Confusion was present on their faces. "And Mike. I didn't mean to snap and be so rude. You didn't do anything wrong. It wasn't right." Billy said, throwing his cigarette to the ground. "It's fine." Lucas stuttered slightly, still dumbfounded.
"Who are you and what did you do to Billy?" Max asked in utter confusion as he even offered her friends a lift. "I was at Doris' house. She talked some sense into me, I guess." He shrugged as he looked at his sister. "You were at Doris' house? Without me? Rude." She said smiling. "Next time I'll take you with me." He said chuckling before starting the engine.
And Steve, whose eyes were glued to the Camaro as it sped out of the parking lot, was confused. How did Billy go from incredible angry to being nice? And it even made him feel a bit bad for punching him.
Steve's head started to hurt and he decided not to think about it any longer.
And even when Doris talked some sense into Billy's head, he still had the thought in the back of his mind how he could even think that he meant anything to Steve. Because Billy knew Steve would of course go back to his girlfriend and not to him.
No one ever goes for him.
