After 6 hours of being in the car, I got text from someone. It was Toby.
"Geez." I said to myself.
His text said:
Hey Ellie, I am super sorry again, but where are you? My whole family is dead. I just, I don't know. Could you pick me up please? I am in an alley near my house.
I texted back:
Super sorry Toby, but I am already 6 hours away from my house. Good luck!
I sighed and looked outside my window. We were in an unfamiliar area. I saw multiple "things" walking in the tall, dry grass.
Briing!
Toby's text said:
Crap, Ellie. I am gonna die. What am I gonna do? You can't come back for me?! Fine! Whatever! I'll find another person to help me. Maybe Jenny!!!
The words punched me in the gut. I stifled a cry, but I said to myself, "He is a lying cheater, and Jenny won't save him!!"
I checked the time, and it said 5:42 A.M.
I yawned and leaned my head onto my shoulder and fell asleep.
* * *
"Wake up!" Wyatt shout-whispered.
I jolted awake and saw we were parked in a small, abandoned motel parking lot. Across the street was a grocery store, a doctor's office, and an all purpose convenience store.
My dad gave me a pistol and a knife, and thankfully he had taught me how to shoot targets before.
We slowly crept into the motel, my dad in front and us behind him, forming a triangle. We looked around until the coast was clear and then we took anything useful that we could find.
"I found a first-aid kit!" Wyatt said excitedly.
"Good." My dad said.
I searched around and around the same room for 15 minutes until I finally found 5 boxes full of food and water.
"Jackpot!" I said.
My dad rushed over to me and smiled.
My dad picked up one and Wyatt and I picked up 2 boxes each.
We drove over to the grocery store and there were about 5 "things" inside it.
"Dad, I don't think we should go in there.." I whispered.
"We can do it, but you have to be careful." He said as he put the arm, chest, stomach, and leg protectors on Wyatt and I.
"What about you?" Wyatt asked.
"I am completely fine." Dad said with a smile.
I was unsure as we tiptoed out of the car and crouched towards the grocery store.
"Ellie, go now!! Kill it!" Dad said. "You can do it!"
I ran up to one of the "things" and stabbed its head. I smiled as soon as it fell. My first kill, I thought. More of them came towards me.
"Dad! Wyatt!" I said as they ran towards the other "things".
When I knew they wouldn't save me, I started swinging the knife all around me, killing every one of them in my way.
When they all died, I was hyperventilating like crazy. I sat for a moment to catch my breath.
"E-Ellie???" Wyatt said, a little frightened. "How'd you d-do...that?"
I shrugged and walked into the store. I grabbed a shopping cart that wasn't creaky and picked up all the canned foods and such. When we unpacked all of it into our Chrysler, my dad smiled proudly at me.
I grinned back at him and hopped into the car.
We would travel again, until we found a safe area to rest.
