I ignored yet another text from her. My stomach was sick and my chest was tight. I don't think I've ever felt this badly. The thought that I was worthless to her, something she could toss into the trash at a moment's notice, hurt.
Lake, I can explain
I powered off my phone. The rain drummed against the roof of my car, and I pulled back into the road, driving farther and farther away. The town growing smaller in my rear view mirror, was now some unidentifiable location on the map of messy rain streaks on my window.
Pulling over into a motel hours later, the sky was gray and thundering.
