"Hullo?" a surly sounding voice came through the phone.
I wrinkled my nose. "Haymitch?" I asked.
I heard some shuffling and then Haymitch cleared his throat. "Vivianna! How are you, sweetheart?"
I had to admit, it had been a long time since I'd phoned him. And I missed him an awful lot. Maybe not his drinking, however. Though a few updates from Katniss told me he'd been doing a lot better, which was something.
"Good, thank you," I replied. "How are you?"
"Eh, as good as one can expect to be," he said nonchalantly. I grin. Typical Haymitch. "Any particular reason for this late night call?"
I frowned and checked the clock. It told me that it was 6pm for me, Finnick and I having just returned home from work, but the time difference must make it around 7pm. Still not late enough for him to think it is.
I rolled my eyes and figured he must've been asleep, or destroyed his clocks again.
"It's seven o'clock, Haymitch," I told him gently. "But I wanted to check up on you and tell you that I have some news."
He yawned and I heard more shuffling. "You wanted to tell me you have news, or did you want to actually tell me the news?"
"Can you ever take anything seriously?" I asked him but couldn't stop the laugh from following. Finnick looked up from where he sat pouring over his business paperwork. He raised and eyebrow but I waved him off, grinning. "I wanted to tell you that I'm pregnant."
There was a sufficient amount of swearing, so loud I had to pull the phone from my ear and wince. When it stopped, I replaced it and heard him laughing. "That's amazing, Anna!" He yelled down the phone and I felt my face lit up. "I'm so happy for you, kiddo! You really deserve this, both of you. Do you need me to move to Four? I will if you need me, just say the word!"
I laughed louder and felt the tears form in my eyes. "No, no, Haymitch, it's okay, we got this. But you do have to come visit at some point. I won't have this baby growing up without their Uncle Haymitch."
"Uncle Haymitch?" he repeated, his voice choked up.
"Of course," I said. "I'm going to ask Katniss and Peeta to be godparents, but you are going to be a part of its life, too."
"Well, Anna, that's just about killed me. If you weren't pregnant, I'd come over there and kill you. We both know I can do it."
We went silent, the mood shifting. I blink hard and try not to think about that side of us all...the killers that we are. How can a killer raise a child, let alone two?
"Sorry, I didn't mean to..." he trailed off.
"It's fine," I replied softly. "I know what you meant."
There was always an understanding between. I would always know what he meant. He would always understand me, too. We've got too much history to every misunderstand each other. That's one of the things I love most about the two of us.
"Look, Anna," he said slowly. "I really am happy for you. I've seen you grow from a child to a young woman and now...a mother. I'm so proud of you, sweetheart. You and Finnick have been through a lot but now look at the pair of you - parents! You're going to do amazing."
Even though he couldn't see it, I clasped a hand to my heart, it brimming with happiness. I looked at Finnick again and my heart grew even bigger.
"Thank you, Haymitch," I said earnestly.
"Always. I have to go, but I'll speak to you soon, Anna. Well done, kiddo," he said, his voice still sounding emotional.
I smiled. "Goodbye for now."
