James' POV
I PICKED UP my pen and paper and tried to continue the already half-finished song I was currently writing.
So far, all I had were some cheesy lines that I was sure had no meaning, whatsoever.
Writing used to be my passion. It was something my dad and I shared.
I got myself into writing lyrics, somehow. I guess it all started when I began to listen to the lyrics of songs, since I never really paid any attention to them.
My dad had a sudden and 'at-the-time-brilliant-and-smart-aleck' thought, which later turned into something real.
His 'oh-so-genius idea' was that I was to learn how to play the guitar.
In the end, I took a few lessons.
I eventually took drum lessons, then bass lessons... until, finally, I started to sing.
Sadly, he died in a car accident a year after my last singing lesson, and I was as depressed as hell.
The band started out when I met Daniel at one of my guitar lessons.
He needed someone who knew how to play the drums, so I found a way to mention that I knew how.
It started out as just the two of us. Then, he met Megan at a party. She told him she could play the drums as well. Maybe even sing a little.
I suggested that while Megan played the drums, I could play the bass and sing.
Daniel could be the one to play the guitar.
We were turning out to be more successful then we thought we would be, and everything was going really well.
Things got complicated when Monica broke up with Daniel and Megan's boyfriend cheated on her.
The band had to take a break because they were both being so dramatic, emotional, and most of all, hard to work with.
After a few months, we finally got back together.
Megan got ahold of herself and Daniel stopped chasing after Monica.
Now there's me.
My father's dead, Karen's gone and my mother's a self-centered bitch who doesn't give a shit about her son. Well, her blood-related son, who was me.
Kingsley, my half brother, was always my mother's pride and joy. He was better than me in everything.
Whilst I was a singer and bass player for a minor band, he was a professor for Quantum Physics at Harvard University.
Getting lost in my thoughts, I didn't realize that Megan and Daniel were yelling my name repeatedly. "Gosh James! We've been yelling your name for the past few minutes! Get your stupid ass out here!" Megan shouted.
"Keep your knickers on!" I shouted back, standing up and changing into proper clothes.
When I walked out into the living room I saw Monica sitting on our couch. "Megan, what the hell is that slutty bitch doing here?"
"Daniel invited her." She answered.
"Where's that bastard then?"
"He's in the kitchen cooking our dinner."
I stormed into the kitchen. As I stood there I could feel my face reddening. I couldn't believe what I was witnessing.
"Daniel... Are you cooking dinner?" I asked, stunned.
"Yeah, and it's not as easy as you'd think." He replied.
I let out a low chuckle and finally blurted out, "anyway, I came here to ask, what in god's name is Monica doing here?!"
"She finally came back to me, dude. She's here with me." He replied with a nervous smile planted on his face.
"Wait... are you guys dating again? Please tell me that you guys are not dating again."
Silence.
"Daniel! Why!? Did you ever realize, that the girl sitting out there," I pointed at the door. "Was the girl who you used to call the one and only bloody bitch? Isn't she the same girl?!"
"She's different now!" He shouted back, our voices beginning to echo throughout the kitchen.
"Get your head out of your arse," I said, shaking my head.
"Believe me, she's different!" Daniel protested.
"You know what..." I began tilting my head to face him completely. "Just keep telling yourself what you want to hear, but I'm done."
As I began to storm out of the room, he somehow managed to stutter out, "coming from the man who's doing exactly what he's saying."
I turned around to face him. "Excuse me?"
"You heard me," he stated, giving me that small nod we boys usually give each other.
"I'll have you know that Karen and I are going to end up together."
"Sure you guys are. Just keep telling yourself what you want to hear. By the way, good luck explaining that to your mom and Kingsley. You're gonna tell them that you're heartbroken because some lady who you only dated for a month, broke up with you, right?"
"What do you mean?" I asked, beginning to get scared. Hopefully he was wrong.
"Meg didn't tell you? They're coming for dinner."
"Why?! Who invited them?!"
"I don't know. Ask Meg." He argued.
"Fine."
I was finally able to stride out of the kitchen and walk my way to Meg.
When I reached her, I asked, "why did you invite my mum and Kingsley to dinner?! That's like the worst thing to do at the moment."
She looked defenseless and guilty when I looked at her in the eyes. "I'm sorry James, it's just that you haven't seen them in like a year. Yeah, you may not like them, but they're still your family."
"I don't care. Please uninvite them."
"James! That's incredibley rude! Just bare with them for one night," she said.
"God! What the hell is going on in this world!?"
Megan started to blink her eyes innocently and begged, "please?"
"Why the hell am I listening to you?!" I said, making my way back to my bedroom.
I carefully looked for something to wear. Something mum would actually appreciate.
After a few minutes of searching, I finally found the perfect outfit.
'Wow, I really do sound like a girl sometimes,' I thought.
When I finished changing, I came back outside and found the woman whom I had threateningly despised my entire life standing by the door, alongside the boy I've resented my entire childhood.
"Hello, dear son." Mum greeted.
"Mother." My conscience responded, though I fought it by trying to sound as careless as possible.
