Chapter IV - Eventually

The next morning came, and I had no motivation to leave my room. I only had a few hours of sleep, which made my head feel like a thousand pounds. It felt like someone had spun me around in a swivel chair, and stopped it abruptly.

What was I going to do today? I didn’t want to stay home. I couldn’t talk to Hiru. He was never home anyway. Wait, Hiru was never home. Maybe, that was my ticket out of the house for a while. My eyes roamed upon my bookshelf. I saw my camera bag. Yeah, I could go for a photo shoot today. I got out of bed, and got dressed.

After getting ready, I left my room quietly. I walked down the hall very carefully, as if I were a spy and one false step would trigger an alarm. “Boo!” I felt someone poke my side. I jumped and it felt like my heart had stopped. I turned around to find Jian. “God. What are you trying to do?” I always got scared easily, so naturally, horror movies weren’t my favorite. “I was trying to scare you, I thought it was pretty obvious.” He said in a satirical tone, and laughed. I gave him a punch on the arm and continued my way down to the kitchen.

I found my mom. “Hey, mom,” I said in a monotone. “I’m going to take pictures today.” I raised my camera bag so that she could see. She rose an eyebrow to me. “Oh, are you going with Jian?” He stood right next to me. “No,” we simultaneously said. Then my mom gave me a look of concern. “Aren’t going to be lost? You’ve never been outside of this house yet! Jian, why don’t you go with her? Guide her around! You’re done with your project now, aren’t you?” He ran his fingers through his hair trying to find what to say. “Well,” he looked at me and saw the glare I gave him. “Okay! I’ll do it!” He gave my mom a wide smile. I looked away in disgust and headed towards the door.

I walked fast. I didn’t know where I was going, but I just wanted to create distance. “Hey, Ailee!” His voice pierced through me, but I stopped anyway. “Hey, you know, I’m a cinematographer. I can show you some great places to shoot,” my interest perked a bit, but that didn’t shroud my anger towards him. But then again, if he didn’t come, I’d be walking around aimlessly. “…and hey, you never know, you may need a model.” Jian strut a ‘model’ pose. “Pft,” I laughed a bit. “Okay, fine. I’m not mad, but if you ever do a pose like that, I don’t know you.”

I let him lead the way, and within ten minutes, I found myself in the middle of many trees. It seemed like miniature forest. It was beautiful. From the vibrantly green trees, to the sun peeking its way through the canopy overhead.

I snapped a few shots and didn’t know what else to do. I was more into photographing people then nature. I looked around and the only person around was Jian, and I was not going to go down that path. I looked down at what I was wearing. A white v-neck and some steel-gray jeans. It wasn’t much, but I could possibly photograph myself, even though I never really did it before.

I retrieved my tripod from my bag and I set it up. “What are you doing?” Jian inquired me. Only then did I notice his video camera. “Woah,” I took a step back from him. “Are you recording? Since when?” I saw that he was zooming in on my face. “Oh you know, just a couple… ever since we got here.” He raced through the last phrase. “What? Why? I quickly turned around,” despite me being a photographer, I hated being filmed or photographed myself, but now that I think about it, it is a pretty common thing with photographers. I bet it was the same with cinematographers, too.

“Hey, Jian, smile for the camera!” I focussed my camera onto him, and he smiled, a really nice one at that. “Wait… you’re not camera shy?” My disappointment set in. Well, so much for revenge. “Not if you’re the one taking the picture,” he gave me a wink, and I shuddered. I wasn’t really I the mood for his playful attitude.
